A school district in Maine - United States has started offering birth control, mainly "the pill" to students in 6th through 8th grades, and will not be required to tell the parents about it.

I live here in the US...but sooo many of these people are fucked up in the head that I just want to get out.

Where should I move to? Should these children be on birth control? Should the school be forced to tell the parents about it?

i think theres 2 ways to look at it, one of them being the way you have discussed. It is pretty horrific. And it really does seem like the type of thing youd probably want parents to know about.

Still look at the other side of the coin, the fact of the matter is, studies show kids are having sex at least at this young of age. In many cases its not the girls fault for doing so, which is reflected in the discreetness that is often given to older girls as well. Its somewhat unlikely that everyone is getting the pill, but it may be getting to people who do in fact need it.

If your a parent, it might just be a signal to try and watch your childs behavior as best you can and to really make sure things dont sneak up on you in regards to sexuality. You dont have to take a child completly out of the world, but realize these things do happen, and that the more involved we are as a society as role models, the hope is that it will happen less.

Now that's just screwed up.

This is perhaps the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I am unsure on my opinion about preaching abstitence, especially about which age its ok to start having sex. BUT FOR GOD FUCKING SAKE, MY SISTER IS IN 6TH GRADE! she's a freaking 10 year old! how the hell can Maine justify giving 10 and 11 year olds the pill? I'm assuming that this is done because this is around the time that girls hit puberty, but that is ridiculous.

I...don't know what to say. Its one thing to not-condemn preteen sex(illegal, but whatever) but its another thing to have SCHOOL SANCTIONED preteen sexual intercourse.

well the 2nd option is whats happening....a lot of times social policy issues regarding sex arent exactly what people would like to happen, but what people think they might be able to do to avoid actually life destroying things from happening. which in some cases is what happens when you are pregnant with a child that young.

How about this. 6th grade girls have not had developed enough brains to understand the consequences of having sex. They aren't aware of the consequences, at least not enough.

While i won't condone preaching absitnence, I would liek this: The schools showing a video or have a speaker of some sort come and show and PROVE all the shit that teen parents have to go through. No college, less pay, a higher cost of living, less likely insurance, basically a fucked up life. Make it very CLEAR to those 11 year olds that having sex and getting pregnant is not 'cool' and not 'popular'


Yes, i appreciate to an extent that school systems are trying to take responsibility. BUT IS NOT TELLING THE PARENTS OF AN 11 YEAR OLD GIRL THAT SHE IS/WAS HAVING UNPROTECTED SEX TO THEIR OWN PARENTS BEING RESPONSIBLE? especially because, if someone doesn't tell the parents, they'll sure as hell find out when little miss preteen princess comes home PREGNANT.

Well the last thing you mentioned is part of the confidentality accords they provide most women. It is a potentially sticky issue and it may be overly pragmatic, but if thats how its on the books i guess thats what they feel is best. In a perfect world i think the parents should probably know too, but we dont know many of the qualifiers.

And i dont know if i necessarily disagree with showing those type of videos but....if you show them to those girls you probalby have to show it to everyone, and do you really want to put the idea in their heads? (being the devils advocate here) Im all for very comprehensive sex education as early as possible, so we get rid of as many cases as possible of ignorance and not knowing, which leads to some of the worst pregnancy situations.

thats fine, and thats the current stance which has led to teh problem main is trying to address. The simple notion is not that anyone is in any way condoning more sex for children. The fact they are taking on such a probably unpopular program is evidence to the fact something probably needs to be done.

Instead of wishing the problem would go away, maine has tried to come up with solutions to the problem. I wont sit here and say i know how things should work in every situation, since im not that talented, nor can i appreciate the subtle dynamics of those young girls lives. You on the other hand, are apparently an expert.

I dunno, I have a sister in 6th grade, and this really hit home. And I never really implied that you were in the wrong. You made it clear that you were just stating the probable reasons the Maine school system would give, and i was more yelling at them.

i agree though, you would have to be a pretty heartless person to not be a little shocked and disgusted when something like this comes out on the news. Apparently the world is not quite kansas anymore out there.

the reason this "story" came to a law was because a school nurse kept seeing teenie-bops coming in to her office pregnant.

She tried to get the clergy, parents and school system involved but nobody gave a damn.

So she pushed it to the legislators, which did do something about it.

home school or private schools. the public schools have failed us for at least the last 30 years.

Tell kids what happens when you have unsafe sex and they wont do it.

Why should taxpayers have to pay for birth control? If a girl gets pregnant at such a young age, kill her.

And that's my problem. Parents NEED to talk to their children about it, instead of a teacher at school. Schools are supposed to be for math, science, language, and a couple other things. They were not ment for Sex Ed.

riggable, when schools start giving out birth control to 6th graders and such, then there is a MAJOR problem with society today. There are things that NEED to be discouraged, not the opposite. Incouraging these things only encourages it more and more, and next thing you know, 12 year olds having sex will be a common thing. Would you be comfortable with that?
