from the reflex personal opinion view....

i dont like them.
They cause a whole lot of destruction in a variety of different ways, and theres really no distinguishing bystander from bad guy so to speak.

from the rationally thinking persons perspective....

obviouisly we need them in the poltical arena in this day and age. Once they have been created, they arent going to go away, and the serve as a pretty strong deterent from time to time. They create the possiblity for economic sanctions, because theres an awful lot of teeth you can put behind them.

clearly we shouldnt let proliferation occur because having fewer nukes is obviously better

thinking it out...

we have to accept people are going to build nukes, unless we are prepared to actively stop people to the point of military action...which we arent. You cant wag the finger at someone for using nuclear power, when we have had the spoils for quite some time. We are disarming so we cant stop proliferating in the long run, even if it its bad, anymore than we will stop with emissions even though the kyoto protcol was signed so long ago.

when i stand on a nuke, i'm more of a tail man myself.

Nukes probably won't be good in the long run. The devastation at Hiroshima has never been equalled and had the USA and USSR gone to war in the 60s we would all have been fucked since there were, and still are, easily enough nukes to destroy the world several times over.

Ironically, the have sort of helped to avoid some wars since MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) has meant that both sides have generally been too scared to use them for fear of the retaliation.

However, no weapon has been made and not been used (I know it was used on Japan in 1945 but that was only once) and history tells us that they will probably be used again some day. Big problem is that terrorists won't care about the retaliation if they were to let off a nuke cos the targets couldn't really hit a particular country since it was only individuals that would be responsible. Just wait, some crazy Arab (sorry... that was racist... some crazy Al-Quaeda member) will probably find or buy an old one in Russia, set it off and then we're all fucked. All George bush has to do is tell that guy with the suitcase (who's always with him) to push the button and we have nuclear war... Bush goes out on a high

But what a way to go, eh?

I think the Russian nukes are more secure then we like to think. They may not be up to western standard, but I think we can be sure they wont be selling them to Islamic Extremists, especially after Chechnya and Beslam, and the theatre siege etc..

I've always wondered why the US are so against nuclear proliferation. Surly the ability for every country to eliminate every other country (and be eliminated in turn) is the ultimate extension of MAD?
Or could it be that they are quite happy to be the ones doing the destruction...

I like them to look at, but I'm not sure I'd want one as a pet.
