You do the work, you should get the reward.

It's not a lot - $100 or so - all the more reason they should pay. They paid to print the posters, hire the theatre, (or pay the utilities and taxes if they own it), bought the paint to do the scenery, etc etc etc.

The punters paid to see the show.

Why rip me off? There's a lot of work in writing a play that's good enough for someone else to stage.

Explain the term 'punters' to me. I've heard it many times, and understand the meaning but where does this come from? Is it a sports/gambling reference? Is it like someone who hires a prostitute? Of all the UK slang this one has always mystified me

I have some very close friends in our xi group that are English. I have to look shoite up all the time

Here ya go:

In British slang, the term "punter" has several meanings:
It commonly refers to a non-professional gambler or someone who places bets.

1..It can also denote a customer of a not-quite-legitimate business or a victim of a con.

1..In financial contexts, a "punter" may refer to a speculator or trader who takes risky bets in the market.

1..Overall, it implies someone who is often seen as being taken advantage of in various situations.

1..These definitions highlight the term's usage in both gambling and broader contexts.

It's not an insult, at least in the context I used it - I never thought about the exact meaning, but I guess in this case, it just means customers, people who have parted with money. To see a show I wrote.
