Actually, not that far off.
Cleveland was originally named Cleaveland, for its founder Colonel Moses Cleaveland, and it wasn't simplified until 1831.
The story of the the simplification is fairly amusing, too. It has origins in the rivalry between two great newspapers, the
Cleveland Advertiser and the
Cleaveland Herald. Apparently, the
Advertiser won the bitter feud and its spelling became the official one.
