Football.....Proper FOOTball

Postby Craig25 on Thu Mar 13, 2025 12:05 pm

Football, or Soccer to our American Cousins is a Passion of mine. To be clearm it's the sport played mostly with the Foot and a Ball I am referring to. Not the sport that the Yanks call Football which is played mostly with the hands for some reason?

Anyway, I am genuinely interested if there are any other big Football fans on CC.

Me - my 1st love is the Scottish National Team obviously. At one point I followed them to almost everywhere in Europe as part of the Tartan Army. Not so much now though but was in Germany for the Euro's which was AMAZING!

Other teams I like are Man Utd (WTF is happening to them???), Clyde (Lower League Scottish Team), Dundee Utd (The Arabs), Werder Bremen and 'The Mighty' VFL Bochum.

Anyway, would love to hear from other Football Fans and hear about the teams they follow.

I'll be watching Glasgow Rangers tonight versus Mourinho's Fenerbahçe tonight. And I fancy the Turks will level the tie by winning by 2 Goals.

I've been in the Amsterdam Arena/JC Arena a couple of times for Scotland games. One of them a 6-0 Thrashing in a Play-Off. 6 of us at the game, totally wasted, all with Stupid hats given the Space Cakes. 6 of us fell asleep before half time!

We had to collect our tickets from the Stadium the day before the game one time. Van Basten was taking Training which we were watching. Imagine the Scene as 4 Half Canned Scotland Fans, in Kilts try to re-create his Bicycle Kick Moment with a Crushed Can as the Ball. All the while, with the man himself watching on. He was absolutely PISHING himself!

So shoot, why are you in USA supporting Ajax?

Also, there is a HUGE Tourney on here based on Football Leagues if you are interested? 300 Players already in it and a Waiting List to get in. Let me know if you are interested and I will send you the 'LIVE' League Tables.

As per wall comment.

I was born in Amsterdam. My Dutch side of my family only drink either Heineken or Amstel beer (fuk the lite or no alcohol) You live in Amsterdam, you better back AJAX!

Scottish Hooligans coming to your town...what could go wrong?

I do love American Football (Chicago Bears) They suck, but there's always next year.

Tartan Army are no Hooligans M8. Exactly the opposite. Whichever City they play in in Europe, becomes PARTY CENTRAL for 3 Days. And I'm not kidding!

Years ago I walked into a pub in Zagreb, next to the Inter Continental Hotel. HUGE Pub. I say to the Barman, 2 Pints. He says We're Out. I say , okay, 2 Wines, He says we're out. I say what do you have? He points to a row of 50 Bottles across the top of his Bar. And says there is a Tiny amount in the 1st 3 Bottles.

I laugh and say have you been drank Dry? He looks at me as if I'm absolutely MENTAL and says 'Drank Dry? I've already been drank Dry and FULLY re-stocked by the Brewery 3 FUCKING TIMES today. They next re-stock which is due any minute will be the Fourth'.

Anyway, The GLASGOW RANGERS won last night.....ON PENALTY's. Very Exciting. They should be your Scottish Team M8, they are also known as 'The Teddy Bears'!

And regarding The Chicago Bears.....I lobe the RE-BUILDING T-SHIRTS:

Huge football fan here. I'm a fan of my hometown Royal Antwerp FC. Two years ago we became champions after 66 years and after an unbelievable last matchday where 3 teams could be champion before matches started. During that last matchday the other 2 teams both were champion, first Bruges then Genk but at minute 93:33 Toby Alderweireld (ex Ajax, Tottenham...) fired a belter from out of the box straight into top left corner and that strike made it 2-2 and made us champions of Belgium.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8HXKmebNJw&t=10s enjoy this one :P
Beaten Barcelona 3-2 at home in CL in 2023. Followed them through europe but not always, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Plzen, and lots of others for the last 40 years.
Also I'm a fan of our national team, the Red Devils. Also did awaydays in Bosnia, Scotland, France....
In 1994 on our honeymoon in the USA I saw Belgium-Holland 1-0 and Belgium-Morocco 1-0 at the Citrus Bowl during the World Cup. Big party afterwords in "partystreet" (can't remember streetname anymore) in downtown Orlando.
Visited stadiums without Antwerp or Belgium reason: 2024 San Siro (AC Milan-Bologna), Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund-Bochum), Old Trafford (Manu-Wolves), 2023 Stade Pierre Mauroy (Lille-Monaco), 2022 Corendon Airlines Park (Antalyaspor-Adana Demirspor)....in the eighties De Kuip (Feyenoord-Sparta Rotterdam) and Ziggodome (Ajax-Den Haag).
Besides Antwerp also a big fan of Liverpool (visited Anfield Road 3 times). Great city also. In other big football countries I fancy Rayo Vallecano (marvelous jersey), Palermo, Hearts, Koln, Feyenoord, Lorient
That's a bout it for an intro :D

Well, in the American association football league, I'm a big fan of the Columbus Crew - they're from a fairly close drive to my hometown and I've been following for the last 20 or so years, was there for the era of Sigi and my dad got me tickets for what ended up being the heartbreaking cup final against Timbers in 2015.

That said, given that the MLS is ... let's just say not the top league in the world :P I took up following Blackburn Rovers somewhere around 2007 and kept with them through their rise and fall - I was really hoping we'd make at least the playoff for promotion this year but that's starting to look dire.

Spent 3 years in China and Beijing Guoan is also one of my teams - one of my favorite bars was right near the stadium in fact - but not nearly as much as the Crew and Rovers.

Oh and of course from the USMNT days Landon Donovan was one of my heroes - but that's practically a given for anyone from the US who follows at all.

I will wait until June 2026 to get excited about Futbol/"soccer":

U.S. Travel Association: FIFA 2026 World Cup Task Force a Welcome Development
Freeman and his staff will work with President Trump ahead of 48-team event

President Donald Trump has signed many executive orders since moving back into the White House, but for the U.S. Travel Association and its President and CEO Geoff Freeman, the order signed on March 7 was the most important.

That particular order created a task force to focus on the staging of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, starting June 11, 2026. The task force will be chaired by Trump. Vice President JD Vance will serve as vice chair, and an executive director — to be named soon — will run day-to-day operations.

“We’re thrilled to see the Trump administration make the World Cup a priority,” said Freeman. “We believe strongly that we need some type of White House coordination to bring together these disparate agencies — Department of Transportation, State, Homeland Security, Commerce — everybody playing a role in building a successful event.

“We’ve got to get moving. The World Cup is only 16 months away and the window is closing to get some of these key issues, visas and customs really worked out. We can’t move fast enough. We’re excited to see this group come together and we’re eager to work with them.”

https://www.sportstravelmagazine.com/u-s-travel-association-fifa-2026-world-cup-task-force-a-welcome-development/#:~:text=That%20particular%20order%20created%20a,will%20be%20chaired%20by%20Trump.

AND:
Why Do Some People Call Football “Soccer”?

One of the best-known differences between British and American English is the fact that the sport known as football in Great Britain is usually called soccer in the United States. Because the sport originated in England, it is often assumed that soccer is an Americanism. In fact, the word is thoroughly British in origin. So why is it that Americans (not to mention Canadians, Australians, and others) are likelier to use the word than Brits are? The answer lies in how the sport developed in each country.

Although football-type games have been around for centuries, the sport we know today is often said to have begun in 1863, when England’s newly formed Football Association wrote down a set of rules. At the time, it was the most widely played game of its kind in the country, but it wasn’t the only one. Rugby football, named after an English boarding school, was a variation that allowed players to carry and run with the ball to advance it toward the goal. The game played under the Football Association’s rules thus became known as association football.

Further, there are two different forms of Rugby.

Rugby Union and Rugby League. I will leave you to take a look at the distinctions JP.

So much to Reply to Silvertop - The link gave fantastic coverage and CONGRATS to your team! A great Goal indeed!

I've been to Belgium twice for Scotland games. Brussels is an amazing city:

100% I would have been at the Scotland Game you went to in Glasgow too. Can you remember which game it was and which Pubs you were drinking in? I've been to Germany loads for Football, was at the 2006 World Cup and the Euro's just passed too. Been to the Czech Rep too loads for games. Great memories of them all!

Of all the other Stadia you mentioned. I have been in Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund-Bochum) - I watched Germany v Scotland (Twice), Old Trafford (Manu-Wolves) - I watched ManUtd and I cannot remember the opponent! Great Day though. Dortmund's Stadium was still the Wetfalon when I was there. 100% it is my FAV Stadium!

You mentioned Bochum, I've watched Werder v Bochum a couple of Seasons ago at the Weiser Stadium. Werder won 3-0, those are my 2 German Clubs. German fans are amazing!

I don't like Liverpool. I don't watch much Scottish Club Football to be honest. I followed Clyde FC for many Seasons but drifted away. Now, just go to 3 or 4 Dundee Utd Games a Season. And follow Scotland obv. Usually a great day out as Cigarettes and Alcohol are consumed in large quantites (I am a non smoker). You have the Jam Tarts as your Scottish team???????

Next game I am at is Scotland v Greece at Hampden Park on Sunday. Union v Werder and Hertha v Greuther Furth (in Stadium which held the 2006 WC Final) and Scotland v Iceland on 6th June. I can't wait!

Manchester was the manky old firm. In London all we do is take over Trafalgar Square for a few days. Occasionally take the turf to relay our Gardens.

Best one was 1977. I spoke to a guy who was sitting on the Train in London, just about to depart to come back up the road. Another Scotland Fan knocked on his Window, said, keep the window down, we've got something to fit in the Train. 2 Seconds later a 6 Foot part of the Crossbar was threaded through the window! :D

That's great you are supporting Football in the USA. I remember that run the USA went on in the World Cup. It was AMAZING. And of course the WC in America, that Italy versus Ireland Game sent New York MENTAL! Americans just fail to realise that Soccer is like 100X more popular than every single American sport combined!

And no RELEGATION. WTF is that about?? US RISK Players love the ruthlessness of the Super League. Introduce RELEGATION into American Lagues and FANS would LOVE IT!

And for those people claiming Football was invented in England. WRONG!

What was invented in England was just a form of Rugby. Football as the world knows it today was invented in Scotland.

Plus, games similar to Football can be traced in Scotland literally 100's of years prior to England writing a Rule book about a bastardised form of RUGBY :D

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news/after-150-years-the-truth-scotland-invented-football-8756018.html
The above is only some of the History. A FOOTBALL was found in Scotland and it was dated to literally 100 years BEFORE England claim to have invented the sport.

Not to mention. Scotland introduced FOOTBALL to most of the planet. Most notably SOUTH AMERICA. You heard that right, Scotland taught Brazil how to play at FOOTBALL and we taught them well! :D

The Pub you mentioned was 'Tiger Tiger' on Glassford Street. It's a shame you did not know me back then. If you had made it to a proper TARTAN ARMY pub you would have absolutely loved it.

For a 7.45pm KICK OFF.....drinking used to start around 9am!

Those were the days!

“We’ve got to get moving. The World Cup is only 16 months away and the window is closing to get some of these key issues, visas and customs really worked out. We can’t move fast enough. We’re excited to see this group come together and we’re eager to work with them.”

I will leave you to take a look at the distinctions JP.

tbf, I do not care much about Rugby; I will watch a game in a championship of some sort. I watched a few matches in recent years and months, but it is not a sport I watch often. And soccer/futbol/FOOTball: I already said that I am waiting for the World Cup in 2026. That is good viewing, especially when I watch the USA play, and US Women do much better than the Mens Team(s).

Most American sports money, attention,AND most of our Best Athletes go to NFL (American Football), College Football, and NBA Mens Basketball. (Most/Many Athletes follow the money. And yes, many go into the myriad of "minor sports" such as swimming, water polo, track & field, and SO many more.)

I rarely watch baseball (MLB), but did go to few games in person with my brothers; and I ALMOST never watch MLS (Soccer). AND NCAA Basketball, especially for the Mens teams, is great TV entertainment. And predicting Brackets in the USA is HUGE.

I like to watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs, too. I think my viewing habits for sports is similar to MOST Americans.

It’s raining money on football: in 2023, $2.7 BILLION spent on FBS publics' football, $826 million to coaches, and a $25 million gap in median spending between the Haves and Have Nots.

and
Revenues for the NFL and college football are most definitely not the same. According to Forbes, the 32 teams in the NFL in 2023 averaged $581 million in revenue. The average revenue of the top 32 college football program, by contrast, as reported to the U.S. Department of Education, was only $100 million.

I like watching the American women beat up every other female team in the world.

That said I can’t watch men play it because it’s a girl’s sport.

I guess I’m happy you are glad to “see me back” posting.

I’m NOT going to that I am EVER happy to see your posts. I may sometimes chuckle to myself at your cluelessness. I wouldn;t classify that as “happy to see” your racist, ranting, misinformed posts. Sorry bruh.

AFC World Cup Qualifying starts up again tomorrow, group C is gonna be nuts:

Japan - 16 (+20)
Australia - 7 (+1)
--- Straight to WC ---
Indonesia - 6 (-3)
Saudi Arabia - 6 (-3)
---- Advances to Next Round ---
Bahrain -6 (-5)
China - 6 (-10)

We got a four way tie on points being broken on goal difference, with four matches to play, and Australia only one point clear of that tie. But China, who's made the world cup exactly once in the history of the world cup (in 2002) - is the only team in the group who's already played runaway group favorite Japan twice and thus doesn't have to play Japan again, so they have by far the easiest SOS down the stretch!

AFC Qualifying gonna be wild!
