"Doomsday mom" Lori Vallow Daybell found guilty — here's what to know about the case

An Idaho jury found Lori Vallow Daybell guilty on all charges, for her role in the deaths of her 16-year-old daughter, Tylee Ryan; her 7-year-old adopted son, Joshua "JJ" Vallow; and her husband's first wife, Tammy Daybell. She had pleaded not guilty.

The trial started on Monday, April 10, after a week of jury selection that saw dozens of potential jurors dismissed, many for being too familiar with details of the case or having already formed an opinion. A jury of 10 men and eight women heard the case, and 12 were selected to deliberate.

The trial saw some emotional moments, with multiple witnesses moved to tears on the stand and JJ Vallow's grandfather openly weeping in the courtroom as he listened to testimony. Witnesses have described finding the bodies of JJ and Tylee as well as Vallow Daybell's religious beliefs.

The defense rested without calling witnesses, and Vallow Daybell did not take the stand in her own defense.

The trial had been delayed in part because Vallow Daybell had been committed, but a judge ruled last year she was mentally competent to stand trial.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho mother Lori Vallow Daybell was convicted Friday in the murders of her two youngest children and a romantic rival, a verdict that culminates a three-year investigation that included bizarre claims that her son and daughter were zombies and she was a goddess sent to usher in the Biblical apocalypse.

For the victims’ family members, the verdict is only a temporary balm: Vallow Daybell must be sentenced, and her fifth husband, Chad Daybell, is awaiting trial on the same murder charges. Vallow Daybell herself is also facing another murder trial in Arizona — this one on a charge of conspiring to kill her fourth husband, Charles Vallow.

“This isn’t the end. Ninety days from today, we will be in Fremont County” for Vallow Daybell’s sentencing, said Larry Woodcock, the grandfather of the youngest victim. “And I will say, ‘Why, Lori? Why?’”

Vallow denies killing her children.

She told the court on Monday she had spoken to Jesus and that her children and Tammy Daybell were "happy and extremely busy" in heaven.

"Jesus Christ knows that no-one was murdered in this case," Vallow said.

She also said the spirits of the three victims often visited her and had told her she "didn't do anything wrong".
