EXPLAINER: Why Sri Lanka's economy collapsed and what's next

https://www.yahoo.com/video/video-nasa-reconnects-capstone-spacecraft-185756194.html

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka’s prime minister said late last month that the island nation’s debt-laden economy had “collapsed” as it runs out of money to pay for food and fuel. Short of cash to pay for imports of such necessities and already defaulting on its debt, it is seeking help from neighboring India and China and from the International Monetary Fund.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who took office in May, was emphasizing the monumental task he faced in turning around an economy he said was heading for “rock bottom.” On Saturday both he and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa agreed to resign amid mounting pressure from protesters who stormed both their residences and set fire to one of them.

Sri Lankans are skipping meals as they endure shortages and lining up for hours to try to buy scarce fuel. It’s a harsh reality for a country whose economy had been growing quickly, with a growing and comfortable middle class, until the latest crisis deepened.

And in the Netherlands:

AMSTERDAM, July 4 (Reuters) - Dutch farmers angered by government plans that may require them to use less fertilizer and reduce livestock began a day of protests in the Netherlands on Monday by blocking supermarket distribution hubs in several cities.

Amsterdam's Schiphol airport and KLM, the Dutch arm of Air France (AIRF.PA), have advised travellers to use public transport, rather than cars, to reach the airport, as farmers' activist groups said on social media they planned to use tractors to block roads.

I linked to Netherland/Nederlands to Sri Lanka to create one fewer thread. Let's see which gets more attention.

BTW: I have only met one player on CC from Sri Lanka, so far.

ConfedSS, you have had 60 views and NO (Zero) replies in that thread (as of this moment). Your lack of clarity and organization and the style of presentation does not invite many serious responses. You use too much hyperbole; what you write has a stream of consciousness lack of pattern. You certainly do not use proper punctuation, other than excessive use and abuse of the ellipses.

Those three little dots are called an ellipsis (plural: ellipses). The term ellipsis comes from the Greek word meaning “omission,” and that's just what an ellipsis does—it shows that something has been left out

What is left out? I argue that what you omit are coherent thoughts and logic.

When someone screams ALL the time, people learn to tune out that person. The same is true for your overuse of large font: excessive, hyperbolic, and quite annoying.

Good idea. Let's also merge and future threads or posts about Ukraine into this thread too.

Dutch police open fire at teenage tractor driver during farmer protest

During farm protests against the government proposal to slash emissions of pollutants like nitrogen oxide, the Dutch police opened fire at a 16-year-old boy in a tractor and detained three demonstrators in the northern Netherlands.

and in Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka: The basics
Sri Lanka is an island nation off southern India: It won independence from British rule in 1948. Three ethnic groups - Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim - make up 99% of the country's 22 million population.
One family of brothers has dominated for years: Mahinda Rajapaksa became a hero among the majority Sinhalese in 2009 when his government defeated Tamil separatist rebels after years of bitter and bloody civil war. His brother Gotabaya, who was defence secretary at the time, is the current president but says he is standing down.
Presidential powers: The president is the head of state, government and the military in Sri Lanka but does share a lot of executive responsibilities with the prime minister, who heads up the ruling party in parliament.
Now an economic crisis has led to fury on the streets: Soaring inflation has meant some foods, medication and fuel are in short supply, there are rolling blackouts and ordinary people have taken to the streets in anger with many blaming the Rajapaksa family and their government for the situation.
line
Amid uncertainty on the eve of his expected departure, organisers of the Aragalaya protest movement - named after the Sinhalese word for "struggle" - announced a list of demands at a public meeting with political parties and trade unions at Colombo library.

Besides demands for the resignations of the two leaders and everyone in their government, they also called for the executive presidency to be abolished, immediate economic relief and a People's Council to advise the government.

They also want the country's coffers, which most believe were drained by corruption, to be replenished. How this would be achieved is not clear.
