As usually, you post are completely detached from reality. It's no longer 'required reading' that is all, no ban, no burning of books, no changing of history or whatever crazy other suggestive things you want to infer.

It's just not REQUIRED that they teach it to 9th graders, though teachers are welcome to teach it if they want.

Let's clarify this matter even more. It is not the entire STATE of Washington, BUT ONLY ONE school district in the state of Washington:

John Gahagan, a board member since 2011, stressed that members were not banning the book, just removing it from the list of required reading. He said a 20-member instructional committee of teachers, parents and community members had voted by a nearly two-thirds margin to no longer have the book be required reading.

I don't think I ever read To Kill a Mockingbird in school. These are the books I remember having to read in American Literature:

- Catcher in the Rye
- Walden
- The Great Gatsby
- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
- Red Badge of Courage
- Where the Red Fern Grows

I'm sure there were more but that's all I remember off the top of my head. I do recall we were assigned to read Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s short story Harrison Bergeron in middle school. There's no possible way anyone who has been in middle school in the last 36 months will have been assigned that. Mookiemcgee has spent half his crypto buying up all the copies of it to burn!

I read "Huck Finn" and "Mockingbird" and both are really good books.

The Catcher in the Rye is supposed to be very good, too, but never felt compelled to read it (on my own) since it was not one I was required to read.

Oh I forgot about Fahrenheit 451 (this was actually semi-optional ... they gave us a list of books and we had to pick one off it and I picked this one).

- The only Hemingway we had to read in American Literature was the Old Man and the Sea but I think some schools have to read more?

- We didn't read Slaughterhouse 5 ... we watched the film and then read a summary! I think we ran out of time in class; either that or Vonnegut's writing was inappropriate for school but they wanted us to know the book existed. I read it on my own later. That prompted me to read Cat's Cradle, Sirens of Titan, and Breakfast of Champions.

- We never read Catch 22 but I think some schools do, or so I hear.

Then these were from middle school ...

- I Am the Cheese (also semi-optional, from a list of books we had to pick ... in retrospect, despite this being a YA novel it seems pretty adult / bizarre for the age range)

- A Walk in Wolf Wood (I guess this one wasn't American Literature though; we didn't have a separate and distinct American Literature class in middle school, just Language Arts)

I completely am drawing a blank as to what we read for English Literature, though. I think it was mostly Shakespearean plays. I know A Midsummer Night's Dream and Hamlet were in there. Also something by T.S. Eliot whom they classified as an English writer instead of American.

Slaughterhouse 5 was on the list for me in HS and was one of my favorite assigned reads, it similarly pushed me to read several of his other books.
We also had to read Catcher, which is a weird book and I'm not sure why schools choose it. Gatsby, Huck Finn both were on the list.
Red Badge of Courage... I've never even heard of before you post. Is Where the Red Fern Grows the sequel?

Of course being in California I had to read all of these in Spanish since CA has completely banned english books in a effort to make illegals feel more comfortable amiright CONFED?

Again, nothing was banned. You've been misinformed and corrected, any teacher who chooses to can make this required reading for their own classroom if they want.

Oh for f*ck sakes, here we go... considering I've lived nearly my entire life in this f*ck awful state, I'll illuminate you on my area.

To kill a Confederate bird was never required reading. Huckleberry wasn't even required reading but i could still find it in our schools library, the only reason i read that to begin with was because of the racial ties behind it and why would be offensive. No class back from my tender childhood to my graduation of 08 was either book required reading.

In fact, no book should be required reading. Let the teacher leave it up to their discretion.

I was reading Grapes of Wrath when i was in the 5th grade. Why? Because my teacher didn't treat me like an idiot and I'm actually capable of critical thinking. You on the other hand, I'm actually shocked you haven't destroyed your keyboard from the amount of drool you spew. I'm positive you read out loud every post thinking you're sending us some texted masterpiece, but it's just absolute trash.

All of this from a guy who spent an entire thread arguing that teaching critical race theory should be banned, and it's also the reason we have school shootings.

In China, they start teaching kids english in 3rd grade (when they are 9). Some students start as early as kindergarten.

In California the street signs are in English, unless the streets are the names of actual people who's names are of Spanish origin. In China there is a whole area where all the street signs, shop signs and basically everything is in English. It's really not that unusual. In any city in America that has a 'China Town' you would also find street and shop signs in Chinese. It's really not all that crazy or unusual anywhere in the world to find this phenomenon. You seem to have an issue with it because it's in Spanish, presumably because you blame Mexicans for all your problems.

How is CA being run? Oh, well it's the 6th largest economy in the world... just behind Germany and ahead of England. God tier weather, people friendly, very little crime I haven't locked my doors at night the decade I've been in this house. I know the news you watch makes it seem really bad, but you should come visit and actually see for yourself why we have such insane high real estate cost (because everyone still wants to live here), and why people really don't mind paying slightly higher taxes (because the services they pay for actually work here).

How your are doing? Drinking water safe in flint yet? Has the manufacturing base Trump promised you come back or has basically nothing changed? Are people cups running over with the new found wealth being created? You can make up all the shit you want about non-citizens voting, none of it is true. Less vitriol would help the discussion and reduce some of the wild claims and ideas presented.

As typical, ConfSS takes a complex situation and oversimplifies it.

His summary of the Flint Michigan water crises is a good example. He tries to blame the Democrats ONLY for the mess, as did saxitoxin.

Note that the water crises and the lead contamination was due to someone appointed in charge of Flint's government by a REPUBLICAN Governor, Rick Snyder. Do not let ALL the BLAME go to Democrats and put NONE of the Blame on the Republicans. It seems to me that the Republicans here were TOO fiscally frugal.

Together the group face 42 counts related to the drinking water catastrophe roughly seven years ago. The crimes range from perjury to misconduct in office to involuntary manslaughter.

The drinking water debacle is linked to at least 12 deaths and at least 80 people sickened with Legionnaires' disease after untreated water from the Flint River caused lead to leach from old pipes, poisoning the majority Black city's water system.

Snyder, a Republican who left office two years ago, is facing two counts of willful neglect, both misdemeanors which each carry a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a fine up to $1,000.

This was the lay of the land in 2011, when Flint, cash-strapped and shouldering a $25 million deficit, fell under state control. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder appointed an emergency manager (basically an unelected official chosen to set local policy) to oversee and cut city costs. This precipitated the tragic decision in 2013 to end the city’s five-decade practice of piping treated water for its residents from Detroit in favor of a cheaper alternative: temporarily pumping water from the Flint River until a new water pipeline from Lake Huron was built. Although the river water was highly corrosive, Flint officials failed to treat it, and lead leached out from aging pipes into thousands of homes.

Soon after the city began supplying residents with Flint River water in April 2014, residents started complaining that the water from their taps looked, smelled, and tasted foul. Despite protests by residents lugging jugs of discolored water, officials maintained that the water was safe. A study conducted the following year by researchers at Virginia Tech revealed the problem: Water samples collected from 252 homes through a resident-organized effort indicated citywide lead levels had spiked, with nearly 17 percent of samples registering above the federal “action level” of 15 parts per billion (ppb), the level at which corrective action must be taken. More than 40 percent measured above 5 ppb of lead, which the researchers considered an indication of a “very serious” problem.
