Update: Netherlands, Belgium and Austria have all descended into rioting and looting as the bumbling authorities' mismanagement of the pandemic has forced all three countries into lockdowns. Germany is looking likely to follow suit. Christmas is once again CANCELLED for Europeans.

Meanwhile I will be going to a nightclub on Saturday and then either having casual sex with a stranger or (more likely) attending a jam packed chicken shop, because I live in a much better-run country (the UK).

From the data, it should be clear that it is a simple matter of pragmatism and survival, not of politics. Current measures are not sufficient and vaccines across the age range (including third doses), masks, greater tolerance of work-from-home, ventilation, and even use of “ green pass” certification may be needed to get us safely through the winter.

Those authors make a random, unreferenced claim that the UK is one of the worst countries in Europe for a metric that they don't even identify. Forgive me for looking at the BBC's graphs, using John Hopkins University data, that show the UK doing better than Netherlands, Belgium, Germany etc. and thinking those are better evidence than 'it's bad because trust me!'.

The UK's daily case rate and deaths have held stable since July with basically no controls in place. The so called 'Freedom Day' when nightclubs and music festivals were reopened had no discernible impact on either statistic. Enjoy your terror if you like but the numbers don't lie.

Because we didn't previously have year-round deaths at more than twice the rate of seasonal flu, and some people can't accept that this wasn't political and that we were in it together, and we never truly saw through a stitch in time because "kids don't spread it", "we can't be expected to cancel holidays/clubnights/pub visits", "do you expect me to do this forever" etc etc, devastating for those of us who made actual sacrifices and lost out, and continue to do so, to see how ill-educated people are; it is bad.

That is true, and my complaint is people were not properly educated, in general and specifically in terms of government guidance, and didn't take it seriously, and self-serving rich people didn't take it seriously. Public hygiene and policy solutions are well-discussed in any article on the subject in the peer-reviewed journal I linked but a broader solution starts with acknowledging a global problem, the same issues writ large, that only some countries like NZ actually cared to tackle and it worked! But it is a contagion, they needed us all to do it. The rest of the world is like you, but it is possible to coordinate policy. South America, China, Africa have all complied with mandates in the past but western countries, left and right, have relied on good old white supremacy. If the solution comes too late, my own solution is to appeal to others to respect that doctors in covid wards still watching some patients die and turning others away are begging the public to wear masks out, and stay in more. You're so insulting!
