The Biden administration and federal regulators argue that the suspension of administering the J&J vaccine shows that the health care system's infrastructure is working and shows that the oversight of the vaccine distribution is effective.

The U.S. is looking into additional cases of severe side effects possibly linked to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.

"These have been a handful of cases, not an overwhelming number of cases," Walensky said at a White House briefing on Monday. "We are working through and adjudicating them, and verifying whether they do, in fact, reflect a true case."

With the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine still on pause in the U.S. after reports of a rare but severe blood clotting disorder in a small number of the roughly 7 million people who've received the shot, health experts now are focusing on what could be behind those uncommon adverse events.

Doctors, scientists and public health experts are turning to Europe for clues, where a similar vaccine made by AstraZeneca -- not yet authorized in the U.S. -- also has been linked to a number of rare blood clots.

The study was carried out on 491 patients with AIIRD and 99 controls at the hospitals. Of the 491 patients, 1.2% or six people developed HZ. Five of them got the herpes infection after the first dose and one after the second.

So a 1.2% of herpes, a 0.8% chance of paralysis, a 2% chance of something else ... start adding all the "handful" cases of horrific side effects together and it becomes a coin toss on whether you get through the vaccine.
