MV Ever Given has gotten stuck sideways in the Suez Canal and is blocking all traffic. Egypt says it will take at least a couple days to free it during which time the canal will be closed. As many as 100 vessels are backed up waiting to transit, with more stacking up every hour.

Though not thought of much the Merchant Marine still exists.

The US Merchant Marine is an organization that operates the large commercial and civilian vessels that enter American ports and travel the rivers and lakes of the country each year. While not a branch of the military, the merchant marine are closely related to the Navy and Coast Guard. Merchant mariners are a key part of the economy, keeping global shipments flowing smoothly and commercial vessels sailing safely.

Dangerous levels of overloading cause these ships to be unstable. Containers fall off these overloaded ships all that time, and are a major source of marine pollution.

The Maritime Safety Council says container losses are down to "only" 800 a year.

https://www.maritime-executive.com/article/1-900-containers-lost-or-damaged-on-one-boxship-causes-return-to-japan#:~:text=The%20World%20Shipping%20Council%20in,in%20the%20three%20prior%20years.
A loss or damage of nearly 2,000 containers would rank among the largest incidents the industry has experienced without the loss of a vessel. The World Shipping Council in its 2020 report on containers lost at sea said the yearly total was declining. In the most recent three-year period, they reported the average was 779 containers lost down by nearly half from the average of 1,390 lost in the three prior years. Among the most significant incidents was 4,293 containers in 2013 when the MOL Comfort was lost and approximately 900 containers in 2011 when the Rena grounded.

Last month, the Maersk Essen lost about 750 boxes while sailing from Xiamen, China, to Los Angeles. Around Nov. 30, the Japanese-flagged ONE Apus hit rough seas traveling from China to the U.S. and lost more than 1,800.

True. This probably wouldn't have happened if it had been the Panama Canal.

Ship still stuck. Could be stuck for WEEKS!

And evidence is mounting that Biden was piloting it ... it had its starboard turn signal on for 200 nautical miles and was going 3 knots in a 10 knot shipping lane.

The nautical traffic jam in the Suez Canal, caused by container ship Ever Given, has resulted in delays for a large number of cargo vessels, including one carrying a sizeable shipment of sex toys bound for the Netherlands.

According to the Daily Star, said shipment consists of some 20 containers packed with "dildos, vibrators and male masturbators", intended for customers of a company called EDC Retail that have already complained about their projected losses, caused by an inability to replenish the stock.

"There are more than 20 containers full of well-running items, such as vibrators, dildos and male masturbators," Evertine Magerman, CEO of EDC Retail, said as quoted by the newspaper. "A lot of these products were sold for Christmas and Valentine's Day, for example. There is now an extra lot on the way to restore stocks. But that is not possible now."

It's floating and they are tugging it to a lake midpoint for inspection.

Reports estimate it may take ten days to partially catch up with the traffic backed up by the incident.

The occurring problem down the road are this Ultra ships which can carry 18,000+ containers might be too big for the Suez to handle. They have such a large profile that the 30+ mph winds that this ship encountered would make it difficult to maneuver even with a port pilot on board and visibility if the sands pick up.
