Why do some people think Harry Potter is bad?

With the 7th and final HP coming out on the 21st, I remembered how during other releases there were all kinds of protest, like book burnings, etc., and I was just wondering how anyone can think anything bad of books that are half a thousand pages long that kids are actually READING! With education as it is in this country, what bad can anyone possibly find in these books?

Some people have this feeling that witchcraft and wizardry are evil and whatnot. That's what usually starts it.
I've never understood it myself. They are fictional books about fictional characters doing fictional things.

Because one crazy Christian heard that magic was a large part of the series. He/She then got together some more Christians and took the book out of context. These other Christians believed that the book would curse them if they read it or they just didn't have the time to read it, so they believed crazy Christian. And it spread like a plague across the USA, the people to ignorant or busy to read the book, and so they agreed. Besides, they needed something to do over the weekend after church. However, there were also smart Christians who read the book, and saw that it taught good morals. However, their views are drowned out by those of the more outspoken idiots. There are actually more Christians who are ok or undecided about the books, only 8 percent are against them. Actually, here's something that will surprise most people. J.K. Rowling is Catholic. That's my view.

witchcraft is from this guy --->

so a
fairy tale with magic aka "witchcraft" must be from this guy --->

basically what monkey said
all kinds of protest, like book burnings
nothing like connecting with those nazi roots

well at the moment i just dont read them cos their not particularly good and there are better written fantasy novels or any novels out there. you'll find most Christians wont have a problem with the books on the level of its evil, though i'm not sure about em myself, i dont think they're very good books.

When I first saw this I thought it would be "bad" as in "not well-written".

You could always ask Laura Mallory.
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/offbeat/ ... ter_3.html
she's gone to court several times to try to ban the books from libraries and such, but the most recent is she thinks she needs to 'rethink her approach' or something.
She hasn't read the books, except for possibly part of the first chapter of the first book.

the above link wrote:Mallory, despite never reading the books herself, still vigorously contends that Harry Potter literature is an "evil" attempt to indoctrinate youngsters in witchcraft...
...the stories "encourage children to perform spells and that the books' good characters lie, cheat and steal," without repercussion
How could she POSSIBLY say that without reading the books!? This sort of thing really irks me.

this is said about her
Since we awarded her last year's Idiot of the Year Award, I have gotten countless comments and e-mails about this case. One blog entry though caught my eye and I think it raises an interesting point. Jason Pitzl-Waters, writer of The Wild Blog Hunt, lamented her continuing coverage and opined that she might, in fact, be some phantasmic liberal creation:
"Maybe we will find out that "Laura Mallory" is really the stage name for a liberal performance artist who is commenting on our modern culture by constructing a stereotypical ignorant evangelical to wage a Sisyphean struggle against the inevitability of Harry Potter."
