ATTENTION all American OT posters:

Americans are being warned against drinking hand sanitiser after four people died and others were left with visual impairments.

A total of 15 people - 13 men and two women - were admitted to hospital after ingesting sanitiser in the southern states of Arizona and New Mexico in May and June, a new report from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.

I guess the liquid that is being used much more than the gel on this side of the Atlantic Ocean has not made it to jolly old England.

Distilleries are producing huge amounts of it to help supply the new high demand, because they are set up already and it can be made by similar processes as the spirits you would produce for human consumption. https://distilling.com/distillermagazin ... sanitizer/

Leaving out the ingredient to make it form gel reduces cost and speeds up processing.

Some of it has a vinegar, or other unpalatable scent to prevent a desire to mix it into cocktails, but most of us don't like our hands to smell bad, so there are some that smell like vodka and some that have been made with pleasant sweet scents.

Most people probably look at who made it and figure. "They make vodka or whiskey so this must just be extra strength."

Now unlike "Americans", Mr severed whisky dick kid, is an expert that could teach the likes of Stephen William Hawking or Neil deGrasse Tyson the subtle differences between, drinking alcohol and disinfecting alcohol, while enjoying a nice pint of lager.

For anyone looking for some education or a refresher.

Or if you think my link could be biased... https://lmgtfy.com/?q=what%27s+the+diff ... lcohol&s=l

But hey, don't let this new minuscule reduction in ignorance from finding out, "It's not gel. Some of the liquid smells tasty." influence your opinion of every single person living in the new world.

With the hand sanitizer shortage at the start of the pandemic, a lot of breweries jumped into the business overnight. Often their products were crap, but that's to be expected when starting up a new production line in a hurry. Over time, the worst ones have dropped out of the business and the better ones have improved.

We were issued hand sanitizer at work that was made from scrap rum that couldn't be sold. It definitely had the smell of rum. As far as I know, none of the people I work with tried to drink it, but we definitely used to tell a lot of jokes along that line, including people mimicking the drinking of it. I think we got lucky; I imagine a real hard-core alcoholic would have been tempted.

Everyone warned not to be ignorant of different alcohols.

Sometimes the simple reason a batch of rum or any beverage grade alcohol can't be sold for drinking is because it contains methanol.

One problem with home production, often called moonshine has always been, so many of those making it did not have the equipment or knowledge to test for methanol.

You could make hundreds or even thousands of batches all the same way and occasionally one turns out to contain methanol.

Before this situation opened up a market for it, it would have just been disposed of.

One could use an actual BBC link and I composed a thread for the exact opposite trolling purpose of this thread.

British citizens warned, Vodka not a hand sanitizer.

Some folks lacking education on the specifics, innocently enough thinking, "Top of the morning governor, it's alcohol so it should do the trick. What?" Need to be informed of the facts, beverages don't contain a high enough alcohol concentration to kill germs, and hand sanitizer usually has a few extra disinfectant ingredients.

Washing your hands with booze is not effective. If you know someone in the UK help spread this possibly vital information.

I put it here instead of making it a new thread, so people will be less likely to miss the joke/point.

He says, posting an article from the international version of the BBC's website that quotes a warning issued by a US company, addressed to US customers.

BBC is a different thing over here.
