Redskins change nickname to Football Team

The Washington Redskins are now officially known as the Washington Football Team.

Their new mascot is Footy the Football, a non-binary, indigenous, bisexual, vegan, disabled, anthropomorphic football. According to Footy's backstory, his parents were killed by police while peacefully protesting a bad call by referees during a game between the Washington Football Team and the Green Bay Packers. He was then raised by a Cherokee Shaman before being recruited by the Washington Football Team as their new mascot, for which he is paid a living wage. On weekdays he volunteers at an organic community garden for homeless Native Hawaiian AIDS patients.

Is that better than Lizard People?

I do wonder, how do you represent a football team in a mascot?

Thank you to the Washington Football Team for taking a bold step forward in the decolonisation of sports. We all keep on striving for a better and more equal world #WhiteSilenceIsViolence

Apparently #NativeAmericanSilenceIsViolence, according to your logic, because Native Americans don't think the Redskins mascot/logo is offensive. News flash: Native Americans designed the Redskins logo.

The poll is 4 years old... likely the media frenzy since and the BLM movement more recently would have moved the dial somewhat.

What’s funniest....

“In response, Snyder vowed never to change the moniker...”

I guess ‘never’ just happened.

also funny...

“Washington's logo has been an Indian chief since 1971. It was designed by Native American Walter “Blackie” Wetzel to depict a member of the Blackfeet tribe.”

Walter Wetzel... what a great traditional Native American name. LOL

For the life of me, I can't understand why you'd end your post in such a stupid and ugly way. Despite his name 'not sounding indian enough' for your liking Jim, he was indeed Native American and did work to further Native American causes throughout his life.

Both of you should read this:

b) a more complete picture, not a silly meme

Native Americans are extinct. Reservations should all be closed, treaties vacated, and tribal governments de-recognized.

The majority of all remaining Native Americans (who are only 1% of the population) are majority white. That's why they no longer enforce blood quantum and define race by enrollment. The continued existence of alleged tribes is more or less underwritten by big Nevada gaming companies who own the licenses and franchises to tribal casinos. Pretending Native Americans still exist is essentially a giant money making scheme that enriches a handful of businessmen in Las Vegas and a handful of blue-eyed, blonde haired, "tribal elders."

This is the biggest scam in anthropology.

I'm reasonably sure extinct is at least a slight exaggeration.

Also they should probably change it to EST 2020.
Seems better for sweeping the past under the rug.

I ended my post like that because to me that name is funny.

Walter Wetzel is a funny name wether is belongs to a Jewish Boy from Brooklyn or a Native America.
It’s funny sounding alliterative name... it sounds like it belongs in a comic book.

If you want to interpret my comment about that name as ugly... that’s on you.

Furthermore, I didn’t comment in anyway on his Native American heritage. I don’t care, and whether or not the logo was designed by an “actual Native American” or not is IMHO meaningless to the logo’s value today. Finally, he may have Native American blood, whatever that means... but he also must’ve had significant German or Jewish German blood. It’s also kinda funny that a guy with some German.Jewish roots winds up running an Native American Tribe.

If you don’t think that’s funny you need to thicken your skin a bit. That’s something out of a Mel Brooks movie.

Saxi’s tone is horrible and his language is offensive...

but I agree 100% that the idea of Reservations and semi-independent “Tribes” is one that has no value.

It enriches a small percentage of elites, both inside and outside Native American Tribes; and it harms the majority of Native Americans who are more marginalized and have fewer real educational and economic opportunities.

Maybe a nun assigned the name Walter Wetzel when he was taken away from his family and forced into a residential school.

Um. Why does it not matter whether or not a claimed racist logo was designed by a person of the same heritage of the logo and didn't find it racist?

Oh, sorry Jameson O'Boston, I thought he might have been born in the mid 20th century when some (100% by Saxi maths) of the genetics of the Siksikaitsitapi might be of mixed heritage.

I don't know, maybe as a child Hutterites dumped him at the reserve, or he wandered in by himself.

Maybe he got grief from the locals for looking too much like a whitey. It's all good, feel free to judge him without walking a mile in his moccasins, but you do sound a little bit like the Klansman in Porky's who said, "That boy just doesn't look American. Know what I mean?"

I am not intentionally piling on. I don't believe you are being malicious.

I also don't think Walter looks too far removed from many of the people that I believe are most likely his distant relatives.

It's interesting, that reports they sold the land.

I can't be offensive because there are no Native Americans to offend. That's like if I said something that could offend an Etruscan. There are none to offend.

We have casino licensees named "Cherokee Nation" and "Navajo Nation" and so forth. These companies happen to have their own police forces and make-believe governments. They are run by people who are majority white and who go through the motions of aping the appearance of "sovereign nations" by occasionally producing trinkets or funding a museum to present the appearance of being the descendants of an extinct culture. No one can legitimately debate why these mega-corporations don't pay taxes because the white people who run them (and who pretend to have a claim to this extinct culture) will call them racist. It's the greatest tax shelter scam in history.

i.e. drunk

How can someone be voted into a race? Race is a set of genetic characteristics. But the OMB claims there is a "race" called "American Indian / Alaskan Native" and, at least the first half of that group (American Indian), in turn determines who is an American Indian by a vote of a tribal council. They can also determine someone is no longer an American Indian by vote. Progressives crow about science being science but turn a blind eye to the fact that one of their cherished institutions determines scientific facts by majority vote of a committee of laypersons who are empowered to reverse those facts on a whim. It would be like the Dubuque City Council voting that gravity doesn't exist and then fining people for not floating off the ground.

The Washington Redskins Football Team should become the Washington Town Destroyers. "Town Destroyer" is not a term used to refer to any Native American so should be safe.

Professor Saxi, please tell us more about the 'science' your alt right friends teach you regarding race. Ram, chime in anytime and help him... I know your guys share the same textbooks.

What amount of Native blood would be acceptable to you 'white man saxi' in order to call oneself native american? would my fiancee at 33% count? would her mom at 67% count? (they are brown and look indian too Jim, sorry but they do have white sounding names like Stephanie and Monica, hope you can make an exception for them)

They are both alive, and not extinct...but if you want to claim that they are extinct and their sovereign rights kept alive through agreements with the federal gov'ts over generations should be dissolved cus 'casino's in vegas are run by the mob' it won't come as much surprise to them. The US gov't has been raping them for so long it's no wonder the children come out half bred white.

I don't know. Are you going around figuring out the genetic make up of everyone on the Rez? If so what is the background of all these folks.

I am a pretty good mix just as far back as I can look back based on the nationalities of my grandparents and their parents.

Then my mom was born near Medicine Hat her parents both move to Canada.

My dad was born in Vulcan, his mom also born in Alberta and his dad near Killarny Manatoba. I was born here so I feel native to Canada but there are people who have had their family located here and being born here for quite a bit longer.

I have never heard of being voted into any tribes. Maybe that is more of a US thing.

I know that in the past you might have been adopted in but typically that was accompanied by the people intermarrying and the children would end up being partially blood relatives with much of the tribe.

Sometimes through events they might be rejected by both the tribe and Europeans.

Depends.

Is she "Native American" as in she holds citizenship in a tribe, speaks an indigenous language, practices an Animist or Totemic religion, participates in tribal ceremonies, votes in tribal elections, and was raised on sovereign tribal territory? Or is she "Native American" in the sense that she once heard a story of her ancestors on one side being Blackfeet and her ancestor on the other side being the King of Italy?
