Many Chinese students are afraid to study in the UK because of fears over the high death toll from the Covid-19 pandemic, say University of Manchester researchers.
The researchers spoke to companies and agents in China that recruit students for UK universities about why families might be hesitating.
"Most parents repeatedly expressed that safety in the UK was their first consideration now," says the study.
"Social media in China reported that many people in the UK were not following social distancing guidance and did not wear face masks in public," says the research.
"They were alarmed by the UK death toll, among the highest in the world," say the researchers.

Or you can keep your kids in China to study at the great Chinese Universities you have, while breathing in putrid toxic air and slowly kill their lungs.

Your source is an American news media website that fills its top rankings almost exclusively with US universities? M'kay.
According to world rankings that are not bought and paid for by the US Government, Tsinghua is the 15th best university in the world, Uni of HK 22nd and Peking 23rd:
https://www.topuniversities.com/univers ... kings/2021There is also HKUST at 27th, Fudan at 34th, CUHK at 43rd and Shanghai JiaoTong at 47th. For those wishing to avoid the mask-less disease pits of the US and UK there are also plenty of good universities in Singapore, Japan, Switzerland. No global parents shall have to feel the need to choose between their child's health or their education again!

Does that mean you have been wearing a mask and observing social distancing during your recent ventures out of the house?

In response to your question 'why do I care?', my response is 'why don't you?'.
As the article points out, which you'd know if you'd read it/could read, UK universities are so heavily reliant on the large amount of money that Chinese students bring with them that if Chinese stop coming to the UK to study the UK's universities will probably all be bankrupt by Christmas. The government is already having to
give emergency loans to 13 of them.

I'm not sure what a "Pro" would do with a tip like that.

As long as I don't need to fly in the next 12 hours I would drink one, or a few.
There was another Chinese beer I liked, one of the restaurants brought in but I can't remember the brand. Lucky Buddha is pretty nice too.
In somewhat related news, who ever is in charge of importing it seems to have stopped bringing in Tetley's English Cream Ale. I am disappoint.

The other branded Chinese beers I remember drinking/seeing are Harbin, Yanjing and Snow. I don't know if it was any of those. Other than that you'd generally see foreign stuff (in the north, at least).

One of my imaginary internet buddies who lived there for a decade or two said it was particularly fun to bring a semi decent wine to dinner. You would be pretty popular since he reported there was a lot of gnarly boozy drinks there.

My experience of drinking in China was largely confined to drinking beer and Chinese baijiu with people who either didn't really give a shit or who knew where to source good baijiu, but I can believe the above being true for wine. It depends where in the country you live and where you shop but in general yes, there are a bunch of people out there still selling knock-off foreign stuff even in shops that an outside eye might think look legit. I wouldn't buy wine from a shop unless I had good reason to trust the merchant knew how to and actually was sourcing the proper stuff.
Given how everyone thinks of the Chinese government as this all-controlling totalitarian robot regime it's kind of ironic that the reality is the government is still quite small and doesn't have much of a firm hand on this sort of low level crime.

Sleeman? I guess that isn't really a 'local' brewery anymore it's everywhere in Canada... but when I lived in Ont they made some of my favs, particularly the cream was good from them

Pretty sure it was the first time they ever cancelled it.
Weird thing is I kind of don't care about the fireworks every night but somehow missed them even though they did them for what would have been opening and closing night.

I'm kind of disappointed in myself. I had a fantastic day including some ok cold beer. Instead of being grateful I bitch because it's not my favourite. What a Karen.
