Diseased Westerners banned from Singapore

While falling-apart US and UK governments allow their citizens to get away with breaking virus lockdown rules whenever they feel like it because 'freedom, dude', Singapore has responded to similar behaviour by reminding drunk Westerners that they are no longer colonial masters free to behave as they please wherever they go:

A group of British men living in Singapore have been banned from working there again after breaking lockdown to go on a "bar crawl".

The men were also fined around S$9,000 each ($6,500; £5,200).

They were charged after a picture of people drinking during the country's "lockdown" - which banned social gatherings - went viral last month.

A separate group, an American couple and an Austrian, were also punished for drinking on the same day.

The Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MoM) said between 1 May and 25 June, 140 people had their permission to work in Singapore revoked for breaking Covid-19 measures.

Better than locking them up for life because they were caught jaywalking three times.

Better than shooting them in front of their kids because they have a similar address to a known drug dealer.

Jaywalking and speeding are offenses that count towards your ‘three strikes’ in the US.

Live your life, because all those poor black people locked up for 300 years in American prisons can’t any more.

‘three strikes’ is not a universal thing in the US

jaywalking and speeding would not ‘count’ towards your ‘three strikes’.

no one lives for 300 years, so no one can be locked up for 300 years

precision is important

There are a wide range of non-violent crimes that count towards three strikes, including shoplifting shampoo, jaywalking or stealing a bike:

no one lives for 300 years, so no one can be locked up for 300 years

You're right, I missed a few zeroes off. The longest sentence ever given out in the US is 30,000 years:

No, sometimes precision is utterly irrelevant.

When you have five consecutive life sentences, it doesn't matter if you're on your third life or your fourth. For that matter, in "25 to life", it doesn't matter whether you're in there for 25 or 50. Either way it's life. You'll come out broken and unemployable, needing to steal to survive, primed and ready to go back in and finish your life sentence.

Some of the sentencing in the U.S. really makes you shake your head.

I remember watching a documentary about one case, where a bunch of guys went over to party with their drug dealer. Halfway through the night, one of them comes up with the clever idea to kill the dealer and have all the drugs for himself, which he did. Some of the others helped, but not all. One of the guys even tried desperately to stop his buddy and prevent the crime. Doesn't matter. All got 25-to-life, including the guy who tried to stop it. If you were there, you're guilty. In every other fucking country on earth, even in Soviet fucking Russia, trying to prevent a crime would have gotten you some leniency in sentencing at the very least, but not in the reality of black America. You were there, you're black, you get the book.

You love to play fast and loose with the facts...

1) You originally implied the ‘three strikes’ law was a universal thing applying to the entire USA. You ignore it when I point this as false, and then link to an article talking about a California Law. So you’re admitting it’s not a US thing?

2) You state people can go to jail under this law for ‘jaywalking’ and speeding’. The article you link however says...

“Under California’s controversial three strikes law, people who commit three felonies can be jailed for 25 years even if the third offence is considered minor.”

Jaywalking is not a felony, or is it even a misdemeanor. It, like a speeding ticket, is considered an ‘infraction’ and will only result in a fine.

Shoplifting and stealing bicycles are misdemeanors 9 out of 10 times unless the value is excessive or some other crime, like violence, is committed concurrently.

You might think you’re being funny... but your exaggeration on these posts ruins your credibility...
oh wait, you dont have any credibility so it doesn’t matter!

People can’t “go to jail’ for that long regardless of how long their sense may or may not be. It’s a moot. point.

The same thing.

always thought that 3 strikes thing was kinda dumb, but it seems to mesh pretty well with the whole "for profit prison" scam they've got going on down there... :?

If you just said the ‘the 3-strike rule in part of the US is unfair” or “the US has very harsh sentences for some non-violent crimes” then we might find common cause. When you say that “jaywalking 3 times gets you a 300 year sentence in the US” then I have to point out how obviously wrong you are.

Again, you try to be funny... but it’s always the USA that is the butt of your jokes, they aren’t even funny, and the exaggeration are just at that point where stoopid people might take your comments at face value.

So yeah... I have to point out how WRONG you are.

I love how people outside US just like to pass judgement on things they know nothing about.

Scam is the wrong word.

You can call it a bad policy, flawed policy, even a racially biased policy.

It’s not a scam... it’s entirely legal.

It’s terrible policy... but it’s not a scam.

Not all Canadians. Generally drugs are only free if you're under 18 or over 65.

During your working years you'd better have a drug plan. Although, codeine isn't too expensive even if you don't...:)

So language no longer means anything?

Seriously, half the problems in this world could be solved if people would learn to communicate better.
That means excessive exaggeration in political debate should end, and the meanings of words need to be understood.

If we live in a world where the word “scam” is equivalent to the phrase ”bad policy” then we might as well throw in the towel.

A bad policy is potentially an honest mistake that can be corrected.
Even if a bad policy or law is abused by nefarious people it still can theoretically corrected by the political process.

A scam is an intentional dishonest and likely illegal scheme whose sole intent is to defraud someone/some entity of money.
A scam has no legitimate purpose.

I believe ‘privatization’ of activities previously performed by the government is not necessarily or absolutely bad.

There are situations where some actions can be better performed by private sector, and there are situations where it’s not effective.

Now in order for you to define the privatization of prisons as a ‘scam’ you must think that the idea was...
- initiated by the legislature with the sole purpose of defrauding the gov’t/public of money.
- the companies so enriched are in on the scheme.
- the police and courts prosecuting the cases/convicts are also in on the scheme.
- all groups are actively colluding together to perpetuate and enrich themselves.

That’s a pretty high bar.

More likely it’s a bad policy... whose original intent was to offload the expense of building prisons, and reduce the cost to the public.
... and now some companies are taking advantage of to enrich themselves... but there’s no active collusion. Likely this bad policy is exacerbated by other bad policies, like the ‘war on drugs’.

When you start using words like scam you turn off the people who originally liked the policy... which may feel gratifying, but makes them feel threatened, so they double down on the policy and you don’t get change. If you want change you are better off using less threatening (and more accurate) language to get these people on your side.

Fun fact: the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand only took place because of a misplaced comma. If the comma had been in the right place then the Black Hand Gang would actually have asked Archduke Ferdinand's permission for them to assassinate a much less high-profile target.
