Yet another racist killing by US police

Another day, another reminder of the brutal oppression that black Americans face at the hand of the minority government:

The FBI will investigate the death of a black man in the US state of Minnesota after a video emerged showing a policeman kneeling on his neck.

In the footage, the man, believed to be in his 40s, is heard groaning and repeatedly saying "I can't breathe" to the white officer.

The Minneapolis Police Department said it was responding to a reported crime.

The incident echoed that of Eric Garner, a black man who died being arrested in 2014.

Garner was placed in a chokehold and uttering the words "I can't breathe" nearly a dozen times.

The Minnesota Police admitted that the man in the footage filmed on Monday died after a "medical incident" in a "police interaction".

It is the latest accusation of US police brutality against African Americans. Recent high-profile cases include an officer in Maryland who fatally shot a man inside a patrol car.

Yeah, this is pretty fucked up. It's hard to watch, and should come with a warning that you are watching a man die slowly over 10 min.

I'm going to post a link, but not embed it because it's not something you should watch unintentionally.

Just read 4 officers already fired for this incident. Hope they are prosecuted! Thank goodness we live in country where malfeasance like this can come to light via an uncensored internet. When things like this happen in China, all attempts to bring shine a light are censored by the state gov't.

+1

Of course, the unfortunate part is that even though they will probably be charged, they will probably not be convicted. Juries give cops an amazing level of latitude in excessive force cases.

That being said, though, it's still nice that we live in a society where we can discuss this openly.

Oh well you said it, so it must be true. No need to do any further research.

The current government was voted for by 25% of the eligible voting population. This means it has support from a) only a small minority of the US population, and b) fewer people than supported the rival candidate government during the last election.

I mean you literally just have to type 'Chinese police officer sacked' into Google and you can find a bunch of stories about Chinese police being sacked for various misconduct, generally after videos or accounts of the misconduct went viral on Chinese social media:

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society ... fter-wifes
https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-china ... KKCN1BF0MX

I'll admit that your unfounded assumptions are pretty convincing though.

In any case, if you think that the absence of a steady stream of news stories about police killings in China can only be explained by some sort of conspiracy theory about a nationwide programme of systematic cover ups by China's Reptilian overlords then that says more about the sad state of affairs in America than it does about China. Ditto the way that when you hear about a police killing in America (one of the ones that happens to be videoed and gain national attention, not one of the many others that flies under the radar), you response is to proclaim 'this video is just more evidence of how free we are'.

Whether you find it inconceivable that their could be countries were the police service that doesn't go around slaughtering civilians with gay abandon and/or have just been relentlessly brainwashed to hate China and love America from a young age, I couldn't say. But either way, it's sad to see.

That is not how anyone else would define the term “minority government”.
I think you need to improve your understanding of the English language, and/or stop trying to manipulate it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minority_government

https://www.oxfordbibliographies.com/vi ... 3-0281.xml

The Executive Branch is NOT the entire gov’t.

The Judicial Branch is a Co-Equal Branch.

The election may have been by a minority of the entire eligible voting population but was not a minority of the actual voters as determined by the Constitution.

The government is not run by a minority race / religion / ethnic group / class etc. that holds legal enforced sway over a separate majority.

In no way do your words apply to he situation.

Care to post some links from Chinese news agencies publicizing these stories within mainland China?

Even the best censors miss some things sometimes, not surprised to see western news agencies running with this.

I’d hate to see us get to a point where firearms are ‘locked’ till they’re released by dispatch... as seen in the recent Watchmen TV show.

“When a police officer pulls over a truck, he can’t immediately access his firearm because it’s locked into a plastic device in his patrol car that can only be opened remotely. The cop calls dispatch and gets patched through to an officer who can authorize unlocking the gun. From the patrol cop’s reaction, we know the authorizing officer is a stickler for rules and insists that the officer answer a series of questions about the situation justifying the need for releasing the gun. Alas, the procedure takes too long and the truck’s driver shoots the officer dead.”

Until recently, British police didn't routinely carry guns. They were kept in a locker downtown and only issued when unusual circumstances warranted. Gradually this civilized policy has been chipped away at, and I'm told nowadays it's quite common to see a Bobby with a gun. Still, it was the norm for a century and a half, proving that it's entirely possible to maintain law and order without using violence to address every problem. When police treat the public with respect and courtesy, they generally get respect and courtesy in return. The tiny number of situations where violence is actually required can be anticipated and planned for.

Not sci-fi. 150 years of well-documented history.

In a touching, living memorial, social justice activists today paid a heartfelt tribute to George Floyd by looting a Minneapolis Target.

Among merchandise social justice activists permanently borrowed were four 8K televisions and a Bose sound system; they pledged they would fondly remember George Floyd while watching Cake Wars on Food Network.

Joe Biden has expressed support for Minneapolis social justice activists.

Despite the increasing insanity of the Democrats, there is still a government in place, that government has total power, and it is run by adults. Americans will vote for Order and Civilization over The Purge in 2020.

Oof this is gonna get ugly.
The regular police in the united states should not be allowed to carry lethal weapons. Full stop.
They should not be authorized to use lethal force in any way.
The "fraternal order of police" has proven again and again and again that they will abuse this power and then abuse the station they hold as the investigators to any misdoings by the police department to minimize backlash and protect officers who are guilty of what is no less then murder.
Duks point about the UK is right on with a reasonable approach, there should be specific officers who have both serious military tech and full clearance to kill individuals that are truly a threat to others around them, and i acknowledge that in the united states, where we have some of the largest mental health issues of anywhere in the world, and some of the least restrictive gun laws, that sometimes this will have to take place and that sometimes people just need to be killed before they kill someone.
That said, unarmed individuals should absolutely not be getting murdered, on camera, with dozens of people watching, on a public street, in brutal fashion, over a crime as petty as suspected forgery, by people who are supposed to represent the common interest.
The fact that i even have to type that out in 2020 in the United states is both ridiculous and embarrassing.

The great ghoul in the closet of British policing no one likes to talk about is that they actually arm 100% of their officers ... but only in ethnic minority areas. Every police officer in the PSNI carries a Glock 17 both on and off duty.

If you are advocating for the British approach, you are implicitly demanding that only police in African-American neighborhoods and on Native American reservations be armed. While I appreciate your right to express that belief, it is not one I support.

Quit trolling Saxi. Obviously Endgame means US police officers only would need to be armed in Irish neighborhoods, not places like Baltimore.

British police still don't carry guns. The only ones who do are some protecting specific locations (such as airports and embassies) and special firearms units that get called out when a firearms unit is specifically needed.

Generally when UK police are surveyed most say they don't want guns, for the reasons you set out above. They want to be seen as a part of the community, not some sort of force being imposed on people.
