Why don't we discuss real time
By “real time” I assume you mean “present day” or “modern times”.
I believe European History from the Fall of Rome till the Present Day is equally “real”.

The church today is doing good. Church machine seems to be working less wonky and no Inquisition resurgence *rubs church machine*
In the present day the Roman Catholic Church makes a regular habit of hiding and supporting child molesters.
In the present day the Roman Catholic Church tacitly supports sexism as it discriminates against women, not allowing the to become Priests.
In the present day the Roman Catholic Church is opposed to the proposition that women should control their own bodies, and would force women to carry unwanted children/fetuses to term. (Obviously your view on this position would determine whether you think this is “good” or “bad”... I’m not arguing a specific view here, I’m simply stating that from the view of Abortion Rights Activists this would be a “bad”.)
... outside the actual “Roman Catholic Church” we could find other “bad acts” perpetrated by extreme Christians in what they believe is the “Name of God”. We can go here if you want, but I think finding three easy ‘bad acts’ the Roman Catholic Church currently engages in is sufficient to prove the point that “the Church” does not exists solely to “do good”.
So in conclusion it really depends on your view and situation in life.
If you are a poor or low income person who is religious and in the US, and you get food from a Church Run food pantry, and you believe we should end abortion... well you’d say the “Church does Good”.
If you live in a drought plagued area of Africa and Catholic Missions brings you food and medical supplies... you’d say the “Church does Good”.
If you were an Altar Boy who was diddled by a Priest, and you told a bunch of people but no one believed you, not even your parents... and then you found out the Priest was moved to another Parish and he did it again... I don’t think you’d agree with the first two people.
