I'm going to see this movie next week. Maybe a WW1 British Saving Private Ryan. The trailer looks like they put a lot of effort into it.

I give it praise for the sets, number of extras, epic filming style and pace. The two main characters were likable. The goals for the two characters were challenging but realistic within the time period.
There were good questions raised. Should a soldier ever go home knowing he will have to leave home AGAIN? My favorite, What would you trade for wine? or What is valued in a war zone?
I would have deleted only one line in the movie. It made no impact on the outcome but instantly changed the us vs. them theme.
The Germans were interesting. More shadowy figures.
Enjoyed it. Wouldn't need to see it again or own it.

The bit where the bridge is broken so he has to leave the truck that was giving him a lift, walk 5 yards starts to cross the broken bridge and gets fired on by a German sniper. Why didn't the men in the truck help? They had disappeared within 40 seconds. Running the other way across the battlefield, unbelievable. And Africans in British regiments. 4/10.

The trucks drove off. The had 6 miles to go by the next bridge. The one solder has a turban. Possible. Not sure it was normal.

Yeah, I've been fascinated since I first started reading about it.
I think the plot is closer to Gallipoli than Saving Private Ryan, but the cinematography looks amazing.
