When I was 19 I decided to go to target shooting. I walked into the shop and I told the owner I wanted to use a Glock 9mm which was popular with a lot of government agencies and police departments at the time. I paid, then he handed me the gun and a box of ammo. I sent the target down the line and proceeded to load bullets into the clip. Then inserted the clip into the gun. Aimed at the poster and pressed on the tripper...Nothing! The trigger wouldn't move. Solid as a rock. I kept trying for 5 minutes, nothing!

The person next to me had finished practicing so I asked him for help. He took the gun, pulled back the barrel and and the gun was all ready to go. He then went and told the owner, "That kid doesn't know anything about guns."

Absolutely true.

The owner came out and he was mad. He said I was convicting when I said exactly what gun I wanted to use. He said without a safety class he would have never have allowed me on the range. He was right.

Don't assume someone knows about gun safety. It's ok to ask.

what you needed was instructions on how to load that specific type of gun & cock it

Why would you do this without knowledge? Granted, the shop should have questioned you more, but you did waltz in there acting knowledgeable, which no rookie in their right mind would do....dude....wtf?

Ive been safely handling firearms for 50 years (taught properly). Taught my kids, taught many many others, kids and adults. None of them simply grabbed a gun and started fucking with it. That's how people die. If someone had, they would NOT be shooting that day and would have to convince me they had learned to have another chance in the future..

So again....really wondering what the point of your post was. Outlining that you were young and dumb AF, blasting the shop or actually wanting to be helpful?

That does not sound good. I don't think you need to own any, that's a personal choice but, I do think more people should learn about how to safely handle fire arms.

Maybe even more so somewhere like Texas where there might be a few more of them than in most cities up here.

There are too many accidents, many could be prevented.

I did not mean I want everyone to get a certificate. I just want everyone to learn healthy respect from someone that is responsible knowledgeable and preferably experienced at shooting, or better yet hunting.

Knowing how fire arms work won't avoid all accidents but it helps. "I didn't know it was loaded." Must be a terrible thing to live with for some, like that DEA guy that shot himself in a class full of teenage students on YouTube.

As a kid I spent a lot of time at two farms. One my maternal grandma lived on and one my dad's uncle lived on. There used to be 22 caliber rifles leaning against a corner in the hall of the uncle's house.

My mom wanted me never to touch or even go near any guns ever but eventually
I did. My dad's cousin a few years older than me and two of my cousins had their own 22s from sometime later in elementary school. I ended up shooting a bit since I was around them so often.

I never took interest in the Richardson Ground Squirrel reduction but I was exposed to it pretty young.

It would have been way better if my mom had just let my dad teach me to begin with.

Occasionally there were various levels of people back then that probably should not have had access to the rifles they were playing with. The Canadian gun laws tightened up in the 1980s. Before that things were a bit looser.

Sometimes training doesn't even help. Here is another recent accident with an instructor.

What's the security like at these sorts of gun ranges in the US? Like, if young HitRed had got his gun, walked into the range and then just turned around and started taking shots at people, or instead of returning the gun as he left the range just shot the owner, is there any security beyond 'other people in the range will fight back'?

Like gun stores, every employee (and they are numerous) are packing. Never heard of this happening. Be the stupidest place to pull a stunt like that..lol.

You can bring your own weapon but it must be empty and locked open. You cannot bring your own ammo....you have to buy theirs. And this is in the indoor firing ranges. Outdoor ranges are member only. At least here...

pretty sure the story is just 100% fake..

no way a gun shop would sell a Glock 9mm without doing a background check.. which would instantly reveal hitred was 19 years old...

we are too assume this gun shop would have only been worried about a safety class..

gun shop liability:
- no background check mentioned - Federal crime
- no id check mentioned resulting in a handgun being sold to a 19 year old - Federal crime

In Texas, the laws are eternal. So when HitRed was 16 (back when Texas was French), the laws were identical to now.

- Selling a handgun or any type of a firearm that is other than a shotgun or rifle to A persons less than 21 years of age is a Federal Felony Offense. A typical conviction is punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment.

I assume it was an indoor range and he RENTED the firearm. Gun stores where you BUY a weapon don't have ranges. Again, at least here...
