Wild Game Dinner

Postby HitRed on Thu Dec 12, 2019 12:40 am

I got invited to a wild game dinner. About 1,200 people attended. All alcohol was free. Even the hard stuff. I had wild boar ribs and many pollo-peppers. All you can eat. The choices were endless. Btw, if you haven't had a pollo-pepper I highly recommend them. I told my wife at my furneral (some day) they need to be served. To keep us entertained the hosts had a gun raffle! Yep, get everyone liquored up and give them rifles, shotguns and crossbows. Hard to believe this is all leagal. It was a nice night. Super happy I went. Full disclosure I didn't drink anything. Had to drive home.

One time I was at a dinner with an old man who was telling us about a game dinner.

He said "I even got to try beaver" so my friends and I snickered a bit. The old man didn't get what was so funny and he said "it isn't as greasy as you'd think" to which we started laughing to his surprise.

It was a very long time ago but I used to get to go to one with my dad and his uncle. I know there was lots of mountain ram, venison, can't remember specifics but the one thing that stands out as pretty unusual at the time was sweet and sour black bear meat balls. One of those dinners was the first time I got drunk.

I would probably only have one or two beers now, my drinking is mostly for flavour these days.

I'd definately like to go to one again. How much were tickets?

I was invited so the cost I don't know. In Texas wild game dinners are hosted by many organizations and churches. Some are auctions for the prizes some raffles.

I might need to try to go to one. My wife won't eat game and does not drink much, only liking dark British beers. There is very little chance I can go to Texas without her so this plan needs work but...

I do small sponsorships of product for local groups that support local hunting / fishing, kids' firearms education / hunting and habitat reclamation for public hunting areas (Pheasants Forever, Oregon Hunters Association, Ducks Unlimited, Local Fly Fishing groups, etc). They frequently do events like this....I enjoy them but never seem to win any fun toys

I have a freezer full of Chukar, Quail, Grouse and Hungarian partridge.....I can cook y'all up some Wild Fowl :D

My wife could eat blueberries, maybe we bring chicken or a steak for her if she is nice. I made shrimp last night, fried in garlic and butter with some parsley. Pretty tasty. I pass through Idaho, could grab some potatoes.

My wild game hunting these days consists of road-killed deer. There used to be a time when nobody wanted road kill and we had to drag them away to dump, but it's become more popular and nowadays there's almost always someone willing to take the deer. If it's in good condition, there's sometimes multiple claimants. Last time I got called to a car vs. deer hit, I had two people arrive almost simultaneously for the deer, and they were almost in a fist fight over it until I got between them and decided who gets the deer.

I usually ask for two chops per deer, although some people bring equivalents. Sometimes I get a rack of sausage. Last time I got a bag of medallions.

I was driving to town to meet my wife for dinner and to look at houses once. A young man that I worked with who lived in Fort MacMurray was with me. Offered him a ride since I had a rental car that day. He takes out his buck knife and tells me, "If we see any deer hit by a car pull over. It's going to be missing the tender loin."

Sausages and rounds sound good.

They FINALLY allow us in Oregon to salvage deer and elk roadkill as of this year. BUT...there are tons of stipulations. You have to acquire a roadkill permit within 5 days of said action, alert the police and the Oregon dept of fish and Wildlife. You cannot leave ANY sign of a cleaned critter at the site (take yer gut pile with you people!)....the cops check. You have to deliver the intact head (and antlers if a male) to the feds within 5 days. You cannot sell any portion of it. Ad nauseam.

4 deer have been killed really close to my house in the last several months. Not in the least interested in harvesting a blacktail in town / in my yard

Yeah, in Ontario it's also mandatory to register road kill, but nobody ever does. At least not for deer, which are plentiful. The cops are often in attendance at car vs deer hits, and they totally agree.

For endangered species or migratory birds its a different thing entirely, of course. A couple weeks ago somebody hit an eagle on the highway. We had to shut down the lane until a wildlife officer came to take it to a shelter.

I wasn't suggesting you hunt them. That would require a grill guard.
