Isn't it a bit silly how New Zealanders refer to themselves?

Having someone else call you a "kiwi" is one thing, but referring to yourself as such is a bit odd.

It's a very diminutive, emasculating sounding word.

It's like if someone gave your nationality the moniker "Fluffy Luvvies" and someone asked you "what nationality are you?" and you said "I'm a Fluffy Luvvie!"

we just call them Hobbits..

Yeah, the key to being really intimidating is to pick a non-intimidating nickname and then make yourself so terrifying that having a funny nickname just adds to the menace.
