Even anti-Beijing partisans lose patience with HK rioters

Hong Kong rioters are now engaged in what is purely a campaign of vandalism, aggression and intimidation towards anyone who they feel doesn't have the correct political views - or, indeed, who might be vaguely related to the mainland.

It is also increasingly descended into farce as the befuddled rioters have - in their blind rage - begun targeting shops not associated with the riots or police in any way, similar to the confused T-Rex in Jurassic Park laying waste to downtown NY.

In recent weeks Hong Kong protesters have:

  • Vandalised and spray-painted various stores that just happened to be owned by a mainland Chinese company
  • Smashed up and spray painted a chain of bubble tea shops because they thought they might be a mainland chain (they were wrong - it's actually Taiwanese)
  • Vandalised Starbucks and other store fronts because the daughter of someone involved in running them said she supports Hong Kong's police
  • Smashed up Japanese restaurants for a Facebook post saying they support Hong Kong police
  • Attacked Fujianese businesses based on the ethno-xenophobic accusation that anyone from Fujian is probably linked to triads
  • Smashed up a Hong Kong bank because it had 'Shanghai' in its name
  • Repeatedly set fire to and blockaded the city's metro network
  • Devised a city-wide map of targets that the are sending people to smash up and/or vandalise

Hooray for US-style democracy! Long may disorder reign!

Even the South China Morning Post - a news outlet that in recent years has displayed a penchant for repeatedly and vociferously smearing Beijing's governments and policies with indiscriminate abandon - has lost patience with the hooligans terrorising Hong Kong's streets.

Over the weekend lawless rioters attacked and vandalized businesses and government buildings, trashed metro stations and in one gruesome incident slashed a police officer across the neck with a pair of box cutters (the officer in question is now in hospital recovering). In separate incidents a mob swarmed a police officer and tried to snatch his rifle (he thankfully was able to resist and therefore avoided being executed in the street) and hurled dozens of petrol bombs at a police station and police vehicles. They even attacked police attempting to investigate a burglary - apparently being a police officer attempting to protect innocent citizens is now enough to make you a legitimate target for mob violence in the eyes of these people.

The supposedly 'pro-democracy' rioters even attacked the offices of politicians who do not support their cause and mobbed/painted two civilian women in the street in broad daylight, in terrifying attempts to use violence to intimidate Hong Kong's politicians into doing what the rioters want. I guess this is what 'Hong Kong-style democracy' looks like - violent mob rule and a city on fire.
