Frequent flyers should be made to pay

Frequent flyers should face higher taxes to help tackle aviation emissions, the government’s climate advisers say.

The Committee on Climate Change says a “frequent flyer levy” would help curb the growing demand for air travel.

Analysis shows that 70% of UK flights are made by a wealthy 15% of the population, with 57% not flying abroad at all.

Aviation is set to be the biggest source of UK emissions by 2050. And at the moment, ministers are planning for an increase of up to 49% in flying.

But the committee says growth should be limited to 25% of current levels.

This will make globalism go away. Higher cost people/products move around less.

the short answer from Yale research...

Sivak puts it this way: “In other words, for a long business trip, driving solo is worse than flying"

It's 2019. There's no reason for long business trips. Except maybe for architects and engineers, who might have to see the physical site. But for salesman, accountants, etc., there's nothing a business trip can accomplish that couldn't have been done electronically.

ikr. People who insist on face-to-face meetings are right up there with people who still ask for paper copies of documents.

There are still reasons for long business trips. There are still limitations on teleconferencing. Long complex design sessions sometimes need to be done face to face. They aren't all that common, but they are, on occasion, necessary. It's easier to get things done in long (whole day) meetings when everyone is thinking of lunch at the same time, as opposed to one thinking of lunch, the other dinner, and the third breakfast.

Granted, it's above my pay grade, but most of the time when I see people preparing for out-of-town trips, they're thinking of lap dances.

it is 2019....
any & all electronic communications have the potential to be hacked by the competition.. and this potential grows every single day...
plus now with Deep Fake technology expanding.. .. you might not even know if you are actually talking to who you think you are talking too on a video link-up..

hence face to face business deals, strategic Planning, negotiations & product designing are essential..

why tax frequent flyers or frequent drivers?

Just put a carbon tax on fuel and you pay it when you use it.

If you use it more you pay more.... simple.

when you are negotiating a deal, there is a definite advantage doing it in person.

... course the advantage only goes to one side of the deal... the person who is better at reading people.

you can’t read people, nor influence them, the same way vie teleconference

I agree, and would add that a lot of the value from conferences and so on isn't the actual lecture (which always sucks and should just be online) but the chance to see and talk to people, create connections. You can't discuss business over a beer with a designer from Berlin over the internet.
