An Amazon delivery driver stole a Texas couple's dog and tried to sell it online, police say

An Amazon delivery driver was fired and arrested after police say she stole a dachshund from in front of a Texas couple's home and attempted to sell it online.

The suspect, 22-year-old Mycah Keyona Wade, was in a Weatherford neighborhood on July 5 making deliveries as a contract driver for Amazon when she spotted the dog, Parker County Sheriff's Office Deputy Danie Huffman said.

The dachshund, a 2-year-old named "RJ," had darted out of his home as his owners opened the door to go to the grocery store and run across the front yard, Huffman said.

Wade snatched the dog from the street in front of the home, Huffman said. A landscaper who reported having a conversation with the suspect about the dog and private security footage from the neighborhood helped police identify Wade.
After an arrest warrant was issued for her arrest, she turned herself in and initially denied she'd taken the dog.

She later turned RJ over to investigators, who returned the dog to its original owners.

"This does not reflect the high standards we have for delivery service partners. We're glad the customer has been reunited with their pet, and we have been in touch with them to make it right. We take these matters seriously and these individuals are no longer delivering Amazon packages," Amazon said in a statement to CNN.

Wade told police she asked landscapers where the dog came from but they were unable to tell her. However, landscapers told police they pointed directly at the dog's home when she asked.

An ad for RJ was located on Craigslist, Parker County Sheriff's Property Crimes Investigator Ethan Stark said, according to the Cleburne Times-Review.

"There was no contact information, but we're pretty sure it was RJ that was for sale on Craigslist for $100," Stark said. "The ad immediately changed once I contacted the suspect."

Wade was arrested on July 16 on one count of theft of property, which is a class B misdemeanor, Huffman said.

She was held on $2,000 bond, which she posted later that day, and was released.

More fake news.

Now Amazon is responsible for the criminal actions of contract drivers.

"Both employers and employees share the positive and negative aspects and results of the behavior while working for or at the company. While the supervisor or manager may receive benefits for the good activity an employee completes, he or she is also accountable for the bad actions. This legal liability could lead to an investigation for criminal charges. Additionally, the company could become responsible for any injury to another person through the actions of the employee. This transferred liability leads to the employer paying for damages even when the company was not at fault in the situation."

In British law, at least back when I studied it, an employer is liable for the employee's actions only when those actions are tied to their job - So for instance if a cleaner from some sort of contract agency managed to damage your property by using inappropriate materials, the company would be liable. If, however, the employee stole your car, they would not be. Looks to be somewhat different in the US according to that quote.

Also, amazon freelance delivery guys like this piece of trash are not employees, they are regular people getting paid for each delivery and they do it with their own cars, kind of like uber drivers.
Most importantly RJ wasn’t for sale on amazon but on craig’s list :p

*subcontractor, not employee

*could

So do you think anyone at Amazon is criminally or civilly responsible for this act, and should be punished?

Obviously there’s some bad press, but aside from that, what punishment should ‘Amazon’ receive?

The title of your OP is still fake news.

Civil and criminal law two different things.

Amazon would be held civilly responsible if the employee or subcontractor did something that caused a loss... say the employee or subcontractor ran over the dog, that would cause a material loss plus ‘pain and suffering’... so Amazon (or their insurance) might be on the hook for that.

Amazon (or some supervisor at Amazon) would only ever be held criminally responsible if they had some reason to suspect there was a likelihood that said act might occur... say if the employee or subcontractor had a history of bad acts and/or was suspicious in some way. Let’s say the delivery person came back to the warehouse with a different dog hanging out in the car a few times, and simultaneously there were news reports of missing dogs... then there may be some duty that would involve criminal negligence if the supervisor didn’t act.

Saying Amazon steals dogs in this case is just silly and to be expected from the OP.
It’s a half-truth that’s twisted and exaggerated to the point that it’s a lie.
Typical of the OP.

In Brit law as above, the employer might be held responsible if someone employed as a driver ran over a dog (or caused other damage), because they did so while carrying out their duties as a driver. On the other hand, if they were say selling stolen goods while on their route, the employer would not be liable.

In Trump's America, the working class is now so poor they have to steal hotdogs to survive.

Duk... this trend/problem existed prior to Trump.
You can’t really honestly blame Trump for it.
... also it has nothing to do with the OP.

See NomadAss, this is how you have a balanced approach/view of the world.

Still doesn’t make your OP accurate.

It was a bit of correlational humour that made me chuckle.

Yes, I'm aware that people have been stealing since 5,000,000 BC.

Yeah, that's been rising steadily for 40 years, and the Tweedledum - Tweedledee rotation of your two pretend parties doesn't make much difference.

Canadian politics is a 'bend over and take it' policy... of course Canada still bends both knees to Britain..
