Imperial Russia also had Muslim soldiers(long before US existed) and they had very interesting policy. In case of a war they avoided sending Muslim soldiers against opposing Muslim Army. Instead they were sending those men against Non-Muslim Army and they were capable as much as the other soldiers. So for them it worked quite well having Muslim soldiers. I dont see why the same principle can not be used elsewhere.
I'm not 100% sure but I think the same principle is adopted by Russia also.
