I find it pretty funny that the BBC can't say the words "ITAR TASS" without preceding it with "Russian state media." Yet you never hear them saying "welcome to BBC Breakfast on British state media."

To YouTube's (Google) credit they put the same disclosure beneath BBC videos as they do ITAR TASS and RT videos "[broadcaster] is funded by the [country] government."

I have to say I'm disappointed to see The Economist at the top of this list though. The Economist is written mostly by 22 year-old zealots who once read a chapter of The Wealth of Nations and now think they know why the whole world needs freedom and democracy.

They did at least stop referring to Singapore as ‘Pyongyang with broadband' after it was pointed out to them how crass they were being.

Of the BBC's 14 board members, only four are appointment by the government. The BBC appoints the rest - including all the executive members - itself and there aren't enough government-appointed board members to rig that nomination process even if they wanted to.

The BBC was established by Royal Charter, which is a document that makes the BBC legally independent of the Government and that cannot be repealed by the Government.

FOX lacks 2 of the 3 characteristics of state media. It doesn't receive state funding and its governing structure is not established by the ruling party.

Its affiliate stations do operate under state licenses, and in my mind it is therefore less independent than a newspaper, however, meeting only one of three criteria doesn't make it state media. Plus said licenses are granted by a multi party commission using an objective regulatory code and the judiciary can injunct an attempt to revoke a license if the code is subjectively applied.

Actually I take that back. Since FOX News doesn't transmit an OTA signal it actually doesn't even need an FCC license, unlike FOX Channel.

The same FOX News that is wholly owned and entirely controlled by Rupert Murdoch, a mogul who famously has a close relationship with the US President and was totally reliant on that President's support to push his FOX-Disney merger through?

One of the reasons I love the night shift is that in the middle of the night the CBC brings in programs from the BBC and Deutche Welle. BBC is definitely one of my most trusted news sources.

I disagree with you on the Economist though. I find very little zealotry there and a lot of balance. I suppose it depends which articles you read.

Am i reading it correctly, 60% of people have not heard of the economist? Interesting the WSJ is the only news everyone seems to trust. They must not have anything interesting to say if they can't piss either side off lol
