Can't say I always agreed with him, but he was worthy of respect. A soldier and a statesman.

Your family did great things for your nation. Thank you for your service.

In Congress was he a Republican that was a Democrat or a Democrat that was a Republican?

Congressional Record, I could never guess where he was going to land.

Hope at your funeral the news concentrates on you and not another attack Trump opportunity.

I think he went where his conscience led him on most things, and that sometimes meant that he wouldn't bend. One of my favourite stories about McCain is that he was offered a chance to be released early as a POW because of his father's status. He refused unless all his fellow POWs were released too.

In mid-1968, his father John S. McCain Jr. was named commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater, and the North Vietnamese offered McCain early release[45] because they wanted to appear merciful for propaganda purposes,[46] and also to show other POWs that elite prisoners were willing to be treated preferentially.[45] McCain refused repatriation unless every man taken in before him was also released. Such early release was prohibited by the POWs' interpretation of the military Code of Conduct which states in Article III: "I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy".[47] To prevent the enemy from using prisoners for propaganda, officers were to agree to be released in the order in which they were captured.[36]

That's a man not easily broken by a party line whip.

If a reporter wanted a Republican to disagree with Republicans John would be on TV. He was really a Democrat that ran as a Republican. If the Congressional switchboard tracked all his phone calls by party I wouldn't be surprised who he talked to more.

His life is super interesting. His Grandfather was an Admiral, Father was an Admiral and if John wasn't shot down he would likely been an admiral. Leaving his first wife when she has cancer or something was shocking. The new wife 2nd was wealthy. His daughter is tough as he was.

I don't know, HR, he always seemed to play by what he thought best for country and people before what was best for party. I think service was pretty much his entire life, and that's how he lived it.

It's just that there's another thread: https://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=228466 from Patches that's kinda about attacking the guy and his family. Maybe just use that thread. It's not like you didn't have options.

McCain's is a story of doing the bare minimum to be not be perceived as a monster, and how the media and Democrats lapped it up like dogs.

https://splinternews.com/the-myth-of-jo ... 1828587230

And indeed, for much of his career (and particularly after his 2000 presidential bid), the media played a willing role in helping McCain to craft his reputation as a political “maverick” and honorable statesman. There’s a simple reason for this, apart from his status as a war hero: McCain was always willing to give the media access, the thing it craves above all.

For this, he was rewarded with a shower of appreciation for doing the bare-ass minimum, such as when he shot down supporters at a town hall in 2008 who attacked then-Senator Barack Obama. (Even that incident is more complicated than you might remember.) And no one appreciated the media’s desire for a drama-filled narrative more than McCain himself; when the GOP nearly repealed the Affordable Care Act last year, he concealed his position until the moment he actually cast his vote. And before he voted to help sink the bill, he told reporters: “Watch the show.” The “show” was healthcare coverage for 22 million people.

Of course, McCain’s willingness to do that bare-ass minimum, rare as it was, did set him apart from his Republican colleagues at times. He bucked his party after 9/11 by opposing the use of torture; in one of the last major votes of his life, he urged the Senate to reject the confirmation of CIA director Gina Haspel, who oversaw torture.

The rest of the article goes on to discuss when he wasn't doing the minimum, and more often than not he fit right back in with the rest of the ghouls in his party.

from another blog, the discussion was his time as a pow.

RICHARD/DOC says:
I have no problem with McCain’s crumbling in his situation.
I wonder if any person wouldn’t do the same. He had to explain this embarrassment to his father and it tortured him a long time.

I do have a problem with the fact that after the war he obstructed any and all efforts to find out about other remaining POWs and attempts to bring them home.
I often wondered why he was an obstruction to that effort by family and friends.

I also have a problem with his continual support of the MIC and there wasn’t a war he never disliked.
His actions along with other neocons, administrations, and congresses have resulted in unjustified military adventures that have resulted in the destruction of multiple countries and populations.

He had no problem consorting with neo-nazis in Ukraine or the worst terrorist elements in Syria.

I’ve often wondered why he was referred to as the “happy warrior”.

McCain is representative of an element in the U.S. that has produced results in global polls of citizenry that have said that the greatest threat to world peace is the U.S.

Let’s just hope Mr. McCain is replaced by someone that will have a moral compass that places peace ahead of strident militarism.

hahahahaha.... good luck with that. Sheriff Arpaio maybe? Your Canadian right? You guys spend 5 months a year in Arizona.... you think that pops is gonna elect a pacifist?

I don't think anyone can claim Mc Cain or any other politician has a defensible record, that is the nature of being a senator almost uninterrupted since the 1980's. but anyone pushing things back towards the middle (i.e. not being a far left/right winger) in todays american politics, deserved more respect than some of you show him. Just voting along part lines every single time is what leads to gridlock in congress... It takes people crossing lines to get anything passed regardless of who is in power, calling someone like that a Rhino to try and oust them from congress to replace them with a flat earth righty only exasperates the problem.

"hahahahaha.... good luck with that." a laughable sentiment mookiemcgee?

I hope not, that would be condemning the world to war until were all dead.
Which could be the case.

Out of interest, that Doctor is American, born raised, educated, worked, raised his family and retired there, southern states I think.

I'm a realist, and as I hear you condemn a recently deceased man to 'boil in excrement for a thousand years'... I wonder if you really understand US politics... The likelihood is very very great that his replacement will be more inclined to support the Trump administration in going to war in the next 2 years. So maybe John McCain wasn't so bad?

Out of (no real) interest...I have no idea what doctor you are talking about? Some random doctor with political opinions and a penchant for sharing in a blog you frequent?

The Doctor is just some guy that said some thing on a blog I frequent.

Mccain was a neocon, the fewer of them the better, just scum that wants people to die for the banks.

If you think otherwise you could read Smedlys book, "war is a racket".
Served as a general with the U.S marines, wrote a book.

There is always "confessions of an economic hitman" , the truths always been available, gotta find it yourself tho.
It sure aint gonna be found in schools.

I have to agree that Mccain will be replaced with another neocon.

Its not like Israel will give up their lobbys any time soon.

Yinon and Wolfowitz, we will follow those agendas until the end, at least it sure looks that way.

I dont like it at all but I am having to agree with netenyahoo. groan.

Broken clocks, Arnazi. Broken clocks.

It's so easy to see through the media orgasm over McCain that even Donald Trump isn't falling for it; apparently the White House flag is at full mast this morning. The heaps of disdain that are being piled on from both the left and right demonstrate that McCain's only friends were in the influential media class and the neoliberal elite that dominate political discourse in the US. He was a racist, classist piece of shit, and used the media to perpetuate that agenda.

Pretty much the only good thing he did was crash numerous US imperial warplanes into the dirt.

His political career was a great example of how far media savvy will get you. He did, however, provide some political cover for normalizing relations with Vietnam. That's worth something in the afterlife, hopefully. And we didn't have most of the wars he wanted. But yes, his ability to get a reputation as a "maverick" while voting with R's 90-odd percent of the time is something they should be teaching in PR school.
