WTF Denmark? Scandinavian countries are supposed to be better than this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghetto_(Denmark)

Stigmatised, marginalised: life inside Denmark’s official ghettos

Denmark is the only western democracy to mark out official “ghettos” – the word is virtually identical in Danish to English, with similar connotations – where residents are subject to different rules from the rest of the country, simply by dint of their address. The first “ghetto lists” were drawn up nearly a decade ago. But in recent months the government has pushed through policies that demand far more extreme intervention in their residents’ lives.

Based on the wikipedia page, it appears that the Danish government is attempting to forcibly move residents out and build, I suspect, nicer buildings and houses. That seems like a weird solution.

Everything old is new again. What's being described is really not that different from Urban Renewal projects elsewhere, including the US, UK, and Canada
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_renewal
Urban renewal is a process whereby privately owned properties within a designated renewal area are purchased or taken by eminent domain by a municipal redevelopment authority, razed and then reconveyed to selected developers who devote them to other uses. Until 1970, the displaced owners and tenants received only the constitutionally-mandated "just compensation" specified in the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This measure of compensation covered only the fair market value of the taken property, and omitted compensation for a variety of incidental losses like, for example, moving expenses, loss of favorable financing and notably, business losses, such as loss of business goodwill. In the 1970s the federal government and state governments enacted the Uniform Relocation Assistance Act which provides for limited compensation of some of these losses. However the Act denies the displaced land owners the right to sue to enforce its provisions, so it is deemed an act of legislative grace rather than a constitutional right. Historically, urban redevelopment has been controversial because of such practices as taking private property by eminent domain for "public use" and then turning it over to redevelopers free of charge or for less than the acquisition cost (known as "land write-down").

The experience seems to be that these projects usually fail to achieve their stated goals and turn into a bureaucratic nightmare.

Murray Rothbard did a lovely job of skewering these project in the Incredible Bread Machine.
https://youtu.be/EZX5aRF4HZM?t=800

The most powerful attack on urban renewal, however, came not from the right but from the left -- the activist Jane Jacobs almost single-handedly made urban renewal a dirty word.
https://newrepublic.com/article/138071/bright-lights-small-government
Jacobs’s work on urban economies, which she expanded in the ’80s, tends to reflect skepticism about the federal government’s role in the economy, rather than about the economy itself. At the time, many of her urbanist peers—including Marshall Berman and David Harvey—were beginning to publish works critical of how capitalism reshapes cities. But Jacobs was a firm believer in the free market: She liked the idea that market interactions build trust and create social bonds that extend beyond their temporary utility. Rather than finding fault with big business, she criticized the government’s role in urban affairs, which she felt had morphed from well-meaning paternalism to a wild experiment in social engineering, involving the physical eradication of neighborhoods that took generations to build.

This pro-business, antigovernment position was new for Jacobs. In many of her early essays, she grappled with the contradiction between her support for the basic ideas behind neighborhood revitalization and public housing, and her outrage over the devastating results. The editors of Vital Little Plans—Samuel Zipp and Nathan Storring—show how her dislike for federal governments (in both Canada and the United States) was shaped by the historical moment of the post–Vietnam War era. She saw similarities between the overreach of federal urban renewal and the hubris of military intervention in Southeast Asia—both of them driven by an emerging class of “systems analysts,” and both colossal failures that destroyed lives.

Bulldozing alone doesn't seem to help much. The Danish approach seems to have some other elements like language education which might be helpful.

Sometimes when I talk to you guys, I feel like I'm in an alternate universe. One where establishing a ghetto, and forcing the people who live there to follow different laws is given a pass because it's somehow just "urban renewal" or "gentrification".

I get that the people who want this are pretty right wing, but that doesn't mean you have to excuse them. It's insane that a country in the 21st century is re-establishing ghettos under force of law.

Oh please, can we not do your whole "You're illiterate" shtick? It got boring for me years ago. Try it on one of the newer posters.

It's a thread about ghettos in Denmark. Deal with it, TGD.

Just give it a rest, mate. If it helps, then I'll happily tell you that I never learned to read. Put it in your sig, Hell, have a banner made if it'll get you out of your rut.

Lubbock Texas bulldozed 10 X 16 blocks (that's a lot of houses) on the East side. No one was forced to live there but it got worse and worse. Wow, is it NICE now! All the people that were forced to sell got compensated by, new apartments, payments OR a new house. I think all sides won.

About the article

I think the vast majority will in a generation or two will be more Danish. Ankle bracelets aren't needed. In another threat I mention that I lost my historical Irish identity (kepted my Catholic one) and don't miss it.

Do you support this idea? Ghettos where a different set of laws apply?

I don't think the government in Philadelphia (or Pennsylvania or the United States) is doing it. I think it's more the private businesses buying out folks. Ten or more years ago, a lot of the communities right near the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University were getting their homes purchased by either the universities or businesses that set up shop right near the campuses. I know a lot of local residents had an issue with it but nothing went in their favor.

No, but I have an additional thought. Of the countless times you've done this type of thing, the broader community has not supported you. Given how little support you've receiver over the past few years, perhaps it is time for you to do some self-reflection rather than finger-pointing. If everyone is against you, maybe it's not them; maybe it's you. Give it some thought.

Aye, I'm familiar with this routine too. "You're in a minority, you don't matter". It's your go-to response when you run out of steam on the "Why can't people read?" thing.

Please don't fallback on your third option, because that's the really annoying one.

Again with your lack of reading comprehension... "Minority" is not strong enough a word. You're literally the only one that thinks you are deserving of support in these particular tussles.

Let's sum up:

(1) Symmetry starts thread about Danish ghettos.
(2) Two people respond with more than one word. One person comments that it's "weird" that the Danes would have a particular solution. The second person types a treatise on ghettos.
(3) Symmetry responds "I can't believe you people and your lack of condemnation for ghettos! I'm living in an alternate universe where people support ghettos!"

Three responses Symmetry. Three; two of which have more than one word. And your initial reaction is outrage. And then when you get called out you go and do your "I'm so awesome and you're just jealous/mean/stupid" act which has worked once in the 5 or so years you've been using it (in the cake/death thread).

So, I say again, perhaps it's not everyone else. Perhaps it's you. Perhaps instead of (3) above, the appropriate response should have been: (a) wait to see if you get a response from someone else (e.g. those whackos who start those weird conspiracy theory threads or GabonX or Phatscotty or whomever passes for those guys these days); (b) respond with "yes, it is weird TGD" and "thanks for the treatise Duk." For once in your life admit that you're wrong, apologize, and have a discussion on Danish ghettos (on these forums; I suspect, but don't know, that you can't admit your wrong outside the forums)

And since I think the third option is "TGD's short play," without further ado:

Symmetry - I can't believe Donald Trump called Omorosa a dog.
Second Poster - Yeah, that's bad.
Third Poster - Dog.
Fourth Poster - Actually, here is a treatise on Donald Trump calling people dogs and other presidents throughout history calling people dogs.
Symmetry - I can't believe you guys support the president of the United States calling people dogs! I'm so sick of you people! You can all die and go to hell!

Yup, here's number 3, right on schedule. Crude parody.

TGD, you and I have been arguing with each other for a long time. You follow the same set of arguments every time you lose a debate.

1) You can't read.
2) Who cares what you think?
3) No, you're stupid.

I'm just a bit tired of it all. Maybe I'm just a bit jaded, or getting old, but an incompetent lawyer telling me that I can't read, and finished off with his holy sexy batman sig? It's becoming tougher for me to take seriously.

When it's combined with the mind-numbing predictability of your posts. Hell, even you must see that sitting down and composing a short drama about me and 3 other unnamed posters is all kinds of crazy town.

I don't know how to help you TGD. I suspect that if I asked you, you'd simply tell me to go away. But hell, you wrote a play where I'm the only named character just to process your experiences with me from a single thread.

Have a song:

PS. Thanks for letting me know about the helper monkeys. They have been dealt with.
