duk probly means Old Style Pilsner, the saskatchewan farmer beer. he most likely started drinking it back in the day, when it was cheap - but now, he's hooked.

I'm Czech, so of course my patriotic duty is to stand up for real Pilsener and yell, "It's not real Pilsener if it isn't actually made in Pilsen!" That would pretty much limit me to Staropramen or Pilsener Urquell, though, both of which are insanely expensive here in Canada.

The honest truth is that I'm really not like that....:)

Any decent-quality Pilsener is fine with me. Here in Canada I mostly drink Moosehead, as the best compromise between price and quality. Others I buy when I can afford to splurge are Heineken, Warsteiner and Grolsch. Steam Whistle Pilsener is also not horrible.

Currently I'm into Harp Lager. I'm excited to come read these in a few years and surprise myself.

For the most part I prefer ales. A nice brown ale is good. My favorite is probably Tetley Cream ale.

Razorvich says that Foster's is his favourite beer (probably because it's Australia's national beer). But then again, he enjoys mass murdering innocent kittens so I don't think I'll listen to him.

They are pilseners in the general sense. They have an IBU between 18 and 40, which is the standard for a pilsener. Of course purists will tell you that a real Pilsener has to be Czech or Bavarian, but as noted in my previous post I'm not that kind of fanatic. Nowadays pilseners are made in something like 100 countries, so the old "Czech or Bavarian" distinction is rather meaningless.

Canadian and some American manufacturers use the terms "lager" and "pilsener" almost interchangeably, although there's still a bit of a bonus that goes with the term "pilsener" so sometimes if a manufacturer has many lines of lager he will refer to the more expensive ones as pilsener and the cheaper ones as just lager.

There are a few categories of lagers that are not pilseners. The Bocks and "dark lagers" are not, the American swill with a single-digit IBU is not (almost anything called a pilsener has an IBU in the 18-40 range), and anything flavoured with fruit or cinnamon or cloves is not. Other than that, most lagers can be called pilseners. Definitely Heineken and Warsteiner's and Grolsch are.

Yards is a Philadelphia brewery. Brawler is an English mild. It's essentially my go-to beer.

I'm not sure of this history of Boulevard Tank 7. It's a farmhouse ale a bit like Sofie.

Did that even exist east of Saskatchewan back when it was brewed in Lethbridge? They probably couldn't get it in Ontario until Molson's bought them. If they could it was probably an exotic import not the local flavour.

There was not a huge price difference way back either. Most beers in the bar were the same price. Draught was the really cheap stuff, I remember old timers telling stories of good old 5 cent a glass draught night.

"What's on tap?" "Lager."

I'm not old enough to remember 5 cent drafts, but they did still have 40 cent drafts when I was in high school.

40 cents for a glass, or 75 cents for the stein.

Fave all time is a nice Russian Imperial Stout. Grants made a good one...

Ok...I brewed beer for many years so am aware of the difference between ale and lager yeasts and their properties.

However, I never understood the whole "Pilsner" thing other than the Pilsner Urquell and it's copiers. So how would you differentiate a normal blonde lager and a pilsner blonde lager? Seems what started out as a beer name based on a city somehow turned into a style that really isn't much different than a beer without that designation. Thots?

I have been told the difference between lager and Pilsner a few times, but the info never stuck.

Nickel beers was a crazy sale that would happen, sometimes even into the 1980s around here, just a while before I was old enough to drink, possibly it was employed to get rid of expired kegs of beer.

It sounded like a recipe for a giant hang over and I also heard stories of often having to stay close to the toilet the next day even if you didn't pig out.

It made some guys avoid draught forever after wards.

Yup, that's correct. Most pale lagers are pilsners. The exception would be very watery beers like the American version of Budweiser which has an IBU of 7. Generally beer judges won't consider something a Pilsner unless it has an IBU over 18 (generally between 18 and 40). A lot of American beers don't qualify, but almost all European lagers qualify except for the dark ones.
