There's more. I started a new thread cos it seemed increasingly silly to keep going under the "Ghana" title.

Meh, I like reading Jones' posts. They show his development as a writer. That's always kinda fascinating for me. He's also unusually open to a bit of criticism, maybe because of his experience as a stand-up. I do a fair bit of editing, more for academic publishing than lit, and it's genuinely impressive to find a writer that wants feedback, but also isn't irate when you provide it.

Huh. Read it. Forgive the ignorance, but is the point of a blog to simply outline your activities along with your opinions? First blog I've ever read....lol.

As to the Americanized large portions, you don't HAVE to eat it all ya know. I love restaurants like that....feeding a family of 4 when going out is expensive. If you eat half your meal and are full, then that's FOUR meals you get to take home and enjoy later.....2 for the price of one. An excellent value imho.

And variety / choices mean you get it the way you want it when you're spending your valuable discretionary income on going out. Again, my opineage.

Interesting......

A blog is about whatever the blogger wants. Some blog about coffee, or wine, or the period costumes they're making, or how their kids are growing up, whatever.

I'm used to the choice thing now, and the portions, but that's how it struck me at the time. And yes, it's expensive eating out, but if the portions were smaller they wouldn't have to charge so much...

But that's not how it works brother....at least in my experience around here, and only in reference to moderate to low price places..

Around here, say you want chinese food. There are a dozen low to moderately priced places within 5 miles of me. All are equivalent in taste / atmosphere (i.e. not expensive / fancy). Prices are all equivalent as well. The range of food VOLUME ranges drastically......from one joint you leave hungry to one you get 3 meals worth. Bizarre. Same with mexican joints and american breakfast joints. Don't get it.....they certainly don't seem to price per ounce, just the style of the management I guess.

I ALWAYS go for volume

And then theres the crap shack down the road that all the uppity folk around here flock to. Ordered a chili burger (my gauge of a comfort food restaurant....lol) and got a small burger on burnt bread with, literally, a QUARTER cup of crap chili. I don't ever recall having sent a meal back in my life, but this dumb bitch looked at me like I was an alien when I questioned the chili volume.....WTF??? Told her to keep the fucking thing. No tip either...HA!! Showed her.

Needless to say, I no no go there no mo

Chinese people don't care about Oregon's obscene portions. There's no standards when they open a Chinese restaurant.

The quality prices and portions size are completely random. In a way that's part of the game when trying a new one. My wife hates that. I love trying to find a great new place that us cheap and good with decent portions.

I look at it like Texas Hold 'em, I am willing to lose a hand on occasion hoping for the elusive royal flush.

How big does your dump have to be to be considered a "royal flush"?

American restaurant culture is really weird to newcomers. Like Jones, I've lived in the UK and the US. It's easy to forget the differences when you get used to it.

Portions are definitely bigger.
Food will have more salt and sugar.
Staff will interrupt your meal more often.
Tipping is confusing.

Actually tipping is still confusing.

Interesting.

By interrupt, do you mean asking if everything is ok and offering refills, etc? If so, are you saying that's a bad thing?

And what is confoozing aboot tipping? 15% is standard...above or below for excellent / shitty service.....

Except at places where, say, you order carry out food, show up to pay, and they give you the bill with the TIP section empty and watch you fill it out, like they expect a tip for providing zero service. Why? The tip is I ordered my damn food from your establishment, bitches. None of your minimum wage employees took any of their time serving us or bussing our table. Then there's the guilt trip and sad eyes when you put DON'T LOOK DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN on the tip line

Yeah, interrupting a conversation is definitely rude

Tipping is weird- weirdly the last time in the US I tipped, the tippee was fired for it
