China Moves to Scrap Presidential Terms, Cementing Xi Jinping’s Stranglehold on Power

The constitutional amendment on term limits would change the phrase limiting presidents to two terms to: “The term of office of the President and Vice-President of the People’s Republic of China is the same as that of the National People’s Congress.”

National People’s Congress members are elected every five years, the same as the president and vice-president. Chinese law does not state that they are limited in how many times they can pursue election to seats in the congress.

Among those policies are a widespread corruption crackdown that has resulted in thousands of Communist Party members behind bars, a war on religion in which he has successfully co-opted the Chinese Catholic Church and promoted a new successor to the Dalai Lama, and an economic plan for world domination known as “One Belt One Road.”

No doubt the US would love it if China adopted the American model, whereby power changes hands every few years and the policies and deals struck by one president are immediately ripped up by the next. Then China too could be resented be all its global partners for continual flip-flopping and unreliability.

i.e. the government has punished corrupt officials, agreed with the Vatican that Chinese bishops should be chosen by China, and published an economic strategy

Oh no, you see we want China to fail. Nothing quite beats the eternal despot who crushes all potential rivals and when he dies (and he does, in the end) leaves a complete power vacuum that causes at best collapse and at worse complete anarchy as incompetent underlings struggle for power.

The deal ripping part is interesting and a recent invention because of an incompetent president. A proper "treaty" has to be signed by the president and approved by 2/3 of the Senate. It would take that same Senate ratio to break the treaty, unless there exists breakage clauses in the treaty itself because the treaty, under the constitution, has the supreme power of law. The so called "Iran" deal, for example was not technically a "treaty."

You see, in spite of the Democrats wanting to wish otherwise (for over a century now) the United States is based on rule of law; our "leader" is not the president (who merely presides) but the "Constitution." The old chap had a run of over two hundred years, not bad as far as leaders go.
