Oregon legalizes filling your own petrol

... a new law signed last year by Gov. Kate Brown of Oregon that took effect on Monday requires people to self-serve at the pumps.

More than 65 years ago, Oregon put a law on the books forbidding residents from filling up their own tanks. Supporters of the ban argue that it creates jobs and increases safety. Meanwhile, critics — especially those from the 48 states where fill-ups are self-serviced — say that pumping gas is perfectly safe, doesn't waste time, and doesn't make gas any cheaper.

lol, ‘Supporters of the ban argue that it creates jobs’

Sounds like those old people that hate self checkouts and mechanised agriculture.

It's nice to have a self-serve option for those who want it, as long as it isn't forced on those who don't.

I won't use a self checkout at the grocery store, and at least at two stores in the local area, myself and like-minded people ignored the self-checkouts and stood in line at proper service checkouts long enough to force them to give up on self-checkout and return to 100% service.

I heard about people doing that at one or two shops near me when self-checkout first became a thing, but because people in London actually have things to do they soon got tired of wasting 15 minutes queuing for a till when half the self-checkouts next to them were empty.

The big supermarkets here have scan as you shop, which is quite handy, but personally I can't wait for checkout-free shopping to become the norm.

Being a native Oregonian, I can say it will be bizarre. I think we are one of only two states that still don't allow self serve? I know when driving in Washington or Hawaii, many times I've sat in the damn car for 5 minutes wondering where TF the attendants were, while everyone around me wondered why TF the dumbass was clogging the line

As I understand it, initially it will be in non-urban areas? What I heard on the radio. Whatever....seems like these days stations only pay for one employee and many times it takes forever to get fuel. I look forward to it; agree they should have both options thus keeping the one employee. Wonder if the fuel prices will be different were that the case.

Are you enrolled in a training class or anything to learn how to pump it?

In NJ they still have an employee fill up for you. A popular t-shirt says "Jersey Girls don't pump gas!". It's still about a dollar a gallon cheaper than it is in CA. The main factor in pricing seems to be relative tax regulations, not whether there's an attendant.

What's really embarrassing is when you pick up your date and an empty beer can falls out on the driveway.....

It's a dumb law for a miniscule task.

Unless you are physically or mentally incapable to do this miniscule job.

Me thinks, you may fit one or both of these categories.

I heard that's a scenic drive but it can get kind-of rough as you get closer to the Equator.

Hahaha, I get this. Brings back memories. I'm originally from NJ where it's illegal to pump your own gas. It's always fun when you get outside the state and find yourself sitting behind someone who doesn't get out of their car and finally you just think, 'huh, they probably don't realize they have to do it themselves.'

I've had to get out of the car a few times to tell people they need to do it and even shown a handful how. I went to college in another state and had my NJ friends who had never pumped their own gas before, took them a while the first time they went to the pump to get it.
