It's funny. When I first came to Canada, I was told that "Boxing Day" was called that because people needed a day off to break down all the useless packaging from all their Christmas gifts.
It's only later that I learned the true origins. Apparently Boxing Day originates as a day when employers would give gift boxes to their employees. Christmas Eve was when people would exchange gifts with family only. Christmas Day was a Holy Day, so the next workday, the 26th, was the day for gifts to employees and other non-family relationships.
