This year is one of the most crazy ever runnings for the Oscars. I know nomination announcements are already over a month away and the awards so far have been all over the place. Using my logical method, Lady Bird will be the winner. However, Get Out has underperformed so far at every preseason awards, so that's my pick. It's one of the best movies I've seen in years. My wife had nightmares after seeing it. That's how disturbing it is to some people. The only movie more disturbing in recent years was Compliance, but that was only disturbing because it was a true story. For me, the movie was more funny than scary and I loved the sense of timing and tension.

Yes. That movie made me feel all the wrong things.

Plot twist. I had no idea you liked to speak as if you lived in the 1920s. Wish I knew before we went for lunch. I do to.
Get Out was shit. Decent movies from this year include Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Okja.

Haven't heard of any of those. Haven't even seen trailers or advertisements.
I'll vote for Apocalypse Now to edge out The Young Guns.

Guardians of the galaxy 2? If you think that movie was the best this year, you deserve a slap to the tip of your dick.
I have not seen Get Out, but for horror, give it to IT. I haven't had a good scare movie until this came out. Genuinely terrified.
Logan was probably the best movie, but that's subject to change when i go see the new Star Wars. Logan FINALLY did Wolverine some justice. An uncensored film about a very violent anti hero. If only punisher did a good film would i be stroking my nerd boner harder than ever.

The only problem with Logan was how flat it was. Kind of like how an .mp3 chops off the highest and lowest notes of music, Logan cut off the highest and lowest notes of emotion. That's actually my same criticism of Walk the Line, another movie by the same guy. Professor X swearing is a cheap gimmick that still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. At the end "So this is what it feels like" and the Johnny Cash starts playing a lot of people in the theater were tearing up, but not this guy. I'm unfazed by that shit. Although I did recently determine that Protestants are probably to blame for superhero movies, since we destroyed the superheros of the last age (the saints). Not that we are against the saints, just against the superhero powers often attributed to them.

Can you give us a list of all this year’s films and we’ll pick the best? For example I had forgotten about Logan and am struggling to remember whether Passengers was this year or last.

The Battleship Island. A movie about koreans trying to escape from a japanese labour camp at the end of WWII. Not the best war movie I've seen, but still a good watch, definitely better than the huge disappointment that was Dunkirk.

Well, there's 8 "contenders". Get Out, The Post (never saw it), Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, Lady Bird, Shape of Water, Darkest Hour and Dunkirk.
There is also "Call me by your name" which isn't actually a movie, it's a "gay movie".
In the wacky world of Oscars, you can't count out craziness like Star Wars, Wonder Woman or Blade Runner winning though.

So I looked into the Post. No wonder I never saw it, it comes out in 3 days. Yet it's already won 2 Best Pictures and 7 nominations (it won National Board of Review back in November, almost a full month before it comes out. But it's based on a true story, has Steven Spielberg directing, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in their first role together, so it must be an Oscar winner, right? Hopefully the academy can see through that like they saw through La La Land.
Blade Runner winning would be awesome because it tanked at the box office.

So the list is out with 9 contenders. Phantom Thread is the only one I didn't predict. Funny enough, I just saw that this last Friday. The costumes aren't as great as you might think. The soundtrack is oppressively awesome. I feel like I need to watch the movie again with no dialogue, just the soundtrack because I missed so much while listening to the people talking. The plot was fairly meandering but still interesting. It reminds me a lot of the "slice of life" anime genre. The main characters were very identifiable with me. Some people might find them off-putting. It's not really Best Picture. Ideally Get Out or Shape of Water wins. I would be mildly miffed in Lady Bird wins but I understand the appeal there. Dunkirk would be a great choice too, but I'm worried it would be a politically-motivated award (it's not Nolan's best film which I would say is Inception, but some might say TDK).

Logan is my top pick for 2017, followed with IT. The Last Jedi was a bust.

what is this? no nicely formatted list of nominees?
i have no clue which are the options, I only saw Get Out, which was good but not as good for an Oscar..
DY, I think you need some help from Thorthoth, for making a nicely formatted list of nominees.

So my pick failed, but at least it went to an awesome movie.
Both music categories were failures though. Phantom Thread had a way better soundtrack than Shape of Water and the song from Coco was third of the five.
