The Democrats don't need Senator Gandalf to stop Republican bills ("Thou shall not pass!") because Senator Mitch McConnell doesn't attempt to move them forward in the first place.

Yes, the US government often seems to prefer to become paralyzed by factional infighting than to press ahead on dealing with the urgent issues of the day.

But at least US citizens are free to complain about it all they like on Twitter.

Oh it's worse than that. Recent primaries indicate that there will be a wave of primaries for the 2018 senate races. Flake is running in Arizona (several possible challengers). Corker saw the writing on the wall and is retiring.

Since I have two Democrats in my state, there isn't much I can do in the way of a primary. Kirsten Gillibrand is up for election in New York (Silly Gilli) but I' confident that the incompetent state Republican party could not find anyone who isn't half insane, then fail to support him and simply give up because the people in New York City always vote Democratic.

Had to read that twice but I think what you are saying is that you're never really offered a choice that you like to vote for.

But that's obviously not true because one of the unique things about the American system is that it enables all citizens to their say on how their country is run.

Oh I get plenty of choices. The current congressman is great and even the ones before him who tried to defeat the Democrat were worth going door to door for.

On the town level we have a full Republican council and supervisor.

The county legislator is a problem, but the Democrat is a farmer who is loved by everyone and thus no one wants to run against him.

The races for county executive would be worthwhile if the Republic committee didn't leave the candidates high and dry.

But for the state? The last Republican choice for Governor was some upstate idiot with a baseball bat.

i.e. when it comes to deciding what days the local council cleans your town parks you have all sorts of great choices, but when it comes to deciding how the federal government runs the country you get nothing

Apparently he did work for a year as a professional cowboy. (I don't disagree that he is a douche; just raising a Point of Information so we're on solid ground.)

His bio is pretty interesting -- construction worker, soldier, lawyer, judge, cowboy, competitive kickboxer. Seems like he'd be a really interesting person. It's sad that religion has poisoned his mind. But I guess that's the point of religion -- it's a vile toxin that can destroy even the finest people.

I supported Lincoln Chafee before he lost to Clinton and I switched to TRUMP.

After Lincoln Chafee finished his degree in Ancient Greek from Brown, he moved to Montana to learn blacksmithing and then spent seven years shoeing horses in the western U.S. / Canada.

Seems like he'd be a really interesting person. It's sad that religion has poisoned his mind. But I guess that's the point of religion -- it's a vile toxin that can destroy even the finest people.

He's two weeks away from becoming one of the most powerful men in the United States, so I'm not sure how he's been destroyed, but okay.

And, anyway, I'm sure all his Hallelujahs are for the base. Smart politicians say they believe all sorts of crazy things for votes (i.e. Barack "Let's Close Guantanamo Bay!" Obama).

Wow, that Brown to blacksmith to U.S. Senate career path is one of the most extreme examples of rich kid privilege I've ever heard. If it happened in the early 19th century, okay... but in the late 20th... yikes.

Chafee wasn't really your type anyway. I mean, I'm sure in Grade Three he beat up some kid on the playground, but I very much doubt if he ever made anyone drink Polonium 210 for speaking the truth, or napalmed an entire city. You're far better off worshiping a guy who made a career out of ripping off his creditors.

Power without a moral compass is meaningless. Once somebody has surrendered their brain to the ghost-whisperers, he might as well be dead.

I wish that were true. Everything I'm reading suggests that he's a true believer. Anyway, time will tell.
