Congresswoman Frederica Wilson said she was impressed by the president's comments to the bereaved wife of a fallen soldier.

The Democratic lawmaker claimed he told the widow: "He knew what he was signing up for, but I guess it hurts anyway."

De Alencar said Trump had researched her husband and was familiar with the awards he had received.

She described herself as a Democrat who does not "do politics." As a father himself, she said, Trump appeared to understand the magnitude of her loss. In the call, Trump talked about her children, especially her oldest son, who plays college football.

"It became nothing about politics but a person who understood, and that is what he gave to us," De Alencar said.

While that's certainly a true statement, context matters. Empathy matters. True or not, it's really not the sort of thing you say to a grieving family member if you have an ounce of either empathy or social skills.

In a democratic country? Yeah... who cares what 50% of the population thinks. It's not like politics is supposed to be a uniting factor.

You can take a couple words out of context and make it seem bad if you want, but obviously the widow appreciated Trump's call.
