Posted: Fri Oct 13, 2017 7:14 amI'm going to go out on a wild limb now and assume that you aren't following the Kenyan election cycle. So, here's a quick recap:
The Kikuyu are an ethnic group in Kenya that are about 20% of the population. They are one of the neatest groups in the world because they have a traditional monotheistic religion that includes circumcision but isn't Abrahamic. The first president of Kenya (Jomo Kenyatta) belonged to this group and so does his son, the current president Uhuru Kenyatta (his mother's name is Mama). Uhuru is basically an ethnic clan leader although he is also the leader of the Jubilee political party.
Another tribe, the Luo (originally from the Nile so more geographically disperse and a much smaller population) has a preferred candidate Raila Odinga, from the NASA party, who was previously prime minister and his father was vice president.
Anyways, on August 8, there was an election which has been overturned by the supreme court for being too African. There was supposed to be a new election on October 23 but that might not happen since Odinga pulled out of the race claiming that the system is too rigged (I wonder if he is behind the times). So now these two ethnic tribes are about to engage in some major war (you heard it here first). What's crazy about this is that Obama is Luo and Wangari Maathai is Kikuyu so both sides have Nobel Peace Prize winners.
The thread title refers to the latest news: no surprise there are protests and then the government of Kenya pulled a page right outta Charlotte and Baltimore. They banned protests. This happened last year too when they were anticipating the election problems but with a slight difference. Last year the government still maintained that peaceful protests are allowed. This time they are banning all protests in 3 main cities but also with no election to come, there is nothing to look forward to except more violence.
