Living standards, gender bias, work standards and societal pressures are actually much worse in Japan than they are in most western nations.It is simply easier to build up a decent life in the west than it is over there. Maybe. I've never been there. Simply relaying what I've read in articles and interviews. It could also simply be a "grass is greener on the other side"-effect. But the fact is true that japanese and koreans view their own society as extremely high-pressured, and they view the west as a lot more laid-back.

How many ‘Western’ guys do you know who love ‘Asian’ girls, want a submissive girlfriend and would rather live in the Far East where people have a stronger work ethic and society is more peaceful? The proportion of guys here who think like that is about the same as the proportion of girls in the Far East who want to find a foreign boyfriend and think Europe or America is the best place in the world (i.e not that many).
The reason some foreigners leave China or Japan thinking most girls there wanted them is because they spent most of all of their time in expat communities and expat bars where the only local girls they came across were people who were actively seeking out foreigners.
That whole ‘girls don’t want to live in a patriarchy’ thing is the kind of comment made by people who grew up in a society that isn’t a patriarchy and think everyone must want to live like that. Truth is there is no shortage of Japanese or Chinese girls whose expectation is they’ll find a man to take care of them, and that’s how they want it to be.

One time, in university, me and my buddy were trying to pick up these two Japanese exchange students.
"So where exactly in Japan do you live?" I asked. (I know brilliant conversationalist. )
"Sapporo," says they.
"I know, that's on the island, isn't it?" says I.
The girls pissed themselves laughing. I could just see their eyes saying "what a fucking idiot!"
I wasn't being as stupid as it sounds. I know all of Japan is islands. I meant, it's not on the main island. It just didn't come out that way.

A few (that I know; this isn't something that comes up in everyday conversation; first there is the sushi barrier). I do know someone who has married a girl from Japan and has been to Japan (but he has disabilities which makes it hard for him to do lengthy walking and Japan isn't exactly a handicapped friendly nation).
