Sushi *WARNING RAW CONTENT*

Since there has been a complaint about the lack of good new non political threads I guess I should start making them up.
When people think "sushi" they always assume raw fish, although there are a variety of types and not all of them are raw. There is even one of a folded egg omelet known as Tamago. Another example is BBQ fresh water eel or Unagi. I once had a coworker; she insisted that a good Uni (Sea Urchin) was better than "the Big O." I'll take her word on that. (She also thought that a Ikura Temaki was like eating an ice cream cone and I will agree to that.)

Is this better than the "Big O?"

Not the hand roll version, but yum.

Not raw!

Maki my first choice, sashimi 2nd, all the others tied for 3rd. Never met a piece of sushi I didn't like.

Sashimi isn't a type of sushi.
Nigiri is the best way to eat the fishies. Anything else and you just lose the taste of the fish amongst the pile of other stuff that's been added. Particularly dislike those cones - they're the sushi equivalent of those huge burgers that fall apart the second you bite into them.
Can't say I've ever branched out much with my sushi though. Salmon, tuna, couple of safe looking white things... Have had this wasabi octopus mix that was okay though.

Big sushi/sashimi fan. This thread holds promise.
However, I have met a sushi I didn't like: uni.

Maguro (traditionally bluefin tuna but frequently served yellowfin tuna or ahi) is my go to. Will snack on others' sushi but this tuna, raw, alone (sashimi) is 95% of what I get. Excellent with a nice hot sake...
We have always been huge poke (po-kay, hawaiian) fans which is "fish salad"...love that part of kauai alot...all the local stores have their own poke bars with about a dozen different kinds of fresh poke every day....as my bride works at the largest seafood wholesaler in the country we frequently get whatever we want ;o) My go to Poke (mix to taste):
Ahi
wasabi
onion
green onion
soy
sesame oil
sesame seeds
lime
Make this for functions all the time...mmmmmmmmmmmm
Thank you Tzorro for the nice thread ;o)

My favorites are nigiri, tuna, octopus and sweetened omelet. I like urimaki especially with tempura shrimp.
There are a few poke places here, have not tried any yet.

It's weird- sushi seems to be a hell of lot more complicated outside of Japan than it is within.
It's pretty simple.
"Maki" is just the Japanese for "roll", and is basically popular in the North, a roll of rice and filling.
Nigiri is the style favoured in the South. a rectangle of rice with seafood sitting on top.
Neither method is exclusive.
Sashimi isn't sushi, anyway.

Only in the way a hamburger patty isn't a full hamburger. It's certainly close enough to be included in the discussion.
So, don't derail this thread with your pedantic idiocy, Symbo.

I'm only pedantic in some ways. Sashimi is certainly up for discussion- RAW CONTENT is part of the thread, after all. It's not sushi though. Plus, not all sushi is raw fish.
