Save Vienna

I was looking through the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and noticed that all the ones listed as threatened are in places you might expect (Afghanistan, Africa, Iraq) except for 3. Everglades National Park, Liverpool* and Vienna are the only sites in first world countries that are threatened. There is already a foundation dedicated to saving the Everglades, so we need to start a foundation dedicated to saving Vienna.

I suggest the entire world starts sending spent nuclear reactor fuel to a depot right in the Belvedere palace. That should save Vienna.

* I don't really care about Liverpool, because

If we would reinstate the House of Habsburg it would probably be a good step in the right direction.

The term Vienna weiners is redundant.

Well that's probably why op was made.

I've never had them myself.

I wrote the post and then when I went to recheck the list, I noticed Liverpool later.

I doubt it was because I was tired but it was a miss read. In addition to writing whatever that said instead of, " then only explains two." I somehow merged Liverpool.

Now I changed my mind and am curious, how two cities are endangered and unesco sites.

They put condos in the Liverpool waterfront and they are putting high-rise condos in the historic centre of Vienna, overlooking all the palaces and opera houses and whatnot. Basically, Ayn Rand is taking a dump.

Most of my exposure to her is via Rush songs.

The point is that some people like all architecture to be new and modern (Ayn Rand's viewpoint, although she philosophically said architecture isn't art). The counterpoint is that the entire reason Vienna is on the list is because of the lack of modern architecture (less so with Liverpool, which already looks like A Clockwork Orange).

Here is an article about the situations:

Why do people still read Ayn Rand? Not that I think most people who like her have actually read her.

I read The Fountainhead. She's a better political philosopher than novelist to be sure. Our own Voltaire...

Sorry, but I still like her. And the funny part is, although there was a time when I agreed with her on most things, I didn't stop liking her when I stopped agreeing with her. She paints tremendously powerful people, almost like prose superheroes, and they're difficult not to love.

That database doesn't even list any factors that it thinks threaten the Vienna city centre.

It does list factors that it thinks threaten Liverpool's old commercial district, including 'lack of clearly established maximum heights for new developments'. Presumably the 'threats' to Vienna are things like 'Starbucks' and 'availability of modern dentists'.

UNESCO is so sucks.

Also just to note, America's only man-made UNESCO heritage site was built by the French (Statue of Liberty). Apparently the only good things Americans ever achieved was to put fences around some of their countryside.

It's listed under News, because it is too new to be in the general desciption. Liverpool has been "threatened" for like 10 years.

http://whc.unesco.org/en/news/1684/

These are the stats for US&A:
Cultural Sites: 10
Natural Sites: 12 (including 1 threatened)
Mixed Cultural/Natural: 1

mrswdk seems to think that indigenous people don't count as mankind.

It's funny because a bunch of the tall buildings that UNESCO currently aims its heightism towards will probably become UNESCO heritage sites ones day.

The were no Injun sites on the little UNESCO map of the world. Just national parks.
