Thread for speculation about season 7 of Game of Thrones. Thank the many faced-god that the Sparrow is gone. Or is he?

If you want to have a look at how Martin thought it would go:

Just curious...did you read all the books first? Before they made this a TV show.....

I did....watched a couple of the episodes and it just felt....wrong. Couldn't enjoy the show as I kept finding it...off....from the books. I hate that...ruins the show for me. Solution....quit fucking reading?

I know this series is hugely popular....the damn artist was just such a sadist, killing off all the people you grow to like...lol

I've said it before, but the last season (that's right, season, you turd) reinforced how much i hate the Daenerys character. She's fucking bulletproof. She should be dead. She fucks up her occupation of Mereen, flees on her one free dragon, gets captured by the khals, then oh yeah, she's immune to fire so she can kill the khals and get their horde. f*ck off, she doesn't deserve shit. Anybody else would've been killed ages ago.

I hope she lands in the seven kingdoms and gets her head chopped off.

I've never seen the TV show. I do have all the books but don't have time to read -- only managed to read 3 chapters in about 3 years.

Thus, I'm a completely impartial judge, and I judge what you say to be true. I hate miracle escapes. When someone makes a fatal error, it should be fatal. Doing logical contortions to save a character just because the character is popular is disgusting.

I didn't even like the fact that Gandalf was resurrected in LOTR. I loved his character, I was sad that he died, but once dead he should have stayed dead. Having him come back to life just made the whole thing feel cheap and contrived.

True although remember Gandalf is an angel like being who directly serves God. He's of the same kind of being as Sauron and Morgoth. He isn't human.

Yeah, yeah. The Maiar are spirits, they only take mortal form when they need to. Still, the character as he portrayed was a human character. Once his mortal form was killed, well, it felt like a cheap plot device to bring it back, even if it was ghostly white.

Read the books, but I think they did a good job with the adaptation. If anything, the thing that annoys me more about the books is that dead characters keep coming back to life, or re-appearing in magical ways. The last book I bought in the series had a load of extra pages as an appendix detailing all the extra characters that you need to remember. A man needs an editor.

Or if you like, I like the sacrifices to the Ed God, more than the work of the Red God.

There's a weird little film called "Series 7: The Contenders", so I threw in a reference. Plus, "season", really?

Winter, dude.

The only worthwhile innovation of Game of Thrones is that it keeps killing off it's main characters. Maintaining consistent protagonists is a passé concept that stems from emotional insecurity.

Other than that, GoT is just soft porn LotR.

No, I read plenty.
Was your stupid question supposed to be a segue for you to pathetically 'brag' that you've read the 'Game of Thrones' books too.

No, no I can't.,, Damn, you go me Symmetry. You called my bluff and I'm forced to admit that I don't even know the titles of any books. Brilliantly played as always.
You didn't become CC's #1 troll-parasite for nothing, did you?

At least enlighten us on what we should read then. Suggestions are always welcome.

Not really. LotR is a classic, but suffers in its moral simplicity. Sure, it's a great story, following Frodo through his trek into despair, but it's black and white. You always know that the good guys will ultimately prevail.

ASOIAF goes the other way. There 're likable characters and some less likable characters, but most of them fall within the same range, especially from the protagonists. You don't know (or shouldn't-- see my previous complaint about Dany) who will come out on top.

And damn dude, it's pretty sad when I'm rooting for sym in a thread.

Actually, that's far from the truth. Yes, the Dark Lord is defeated and the Ring is destroyed, but people don't just go to being happy and whole. Frodo never overcomes his melancholy and sails off to the Undying Lands. The elves are nothing but sadness; everything about them is a slow fading and waning. The dwarves are less numberous, the Ents are headed towards extinction. Man is the only species that is rising, but he is a more banal and less majestic version of his Numenorean ancestor. One day, it is said, even Tom Bombadil will sing no more.

It's far from black and white. It is as complex as life itself; a sad and wistful look at how bright and promising things were in the morning of your youth, followed by one realization after another that tomorrow will never be as bold as yesterday.

Well said. Tolkien was a student of old and middle English, and so he kind of had an interesting take on cultural change. I'm pretty sure he translated Beowulf, which has a weird mix of old Anglo-Germanic-Nordic (there's probably a better term) religion and newer Christianity in it, for example. It's no great leap to see him putting those kinds of thoughts into his work. A longing for the past to not be forgotten in a more calm future. The gods and monsters of the past gone, but their stories and songs not forgotten.

So yeah, not a black and white world view at all. If anything, I think Tolkien wanted people to have stories and poems, rather than wars and battles to remember people by.

That isn't what I'm taking about. That's the setting. The trilogy was always meant to be the history of a past era (middle era preceding this one), so the exodus and extinction of non human races is expected. That's world building.

I meant the actual plot. About the only thing that stands out is the temptation of Boromir.
