Not sure that's necessarily an either or situation.

What was "founded" ?

It's really hard to pin down a precise "founding" moment, but rather a series of "rebrandings" and "reorganizations."
The term "United States of America" was first used some time early in 1776 by A PLANTER (a moniker for one of the founding fathers perhaps).
It was then incorporated into the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson

The Articles of Confederation was simply a formal reorganization of the "Continental Congress" now that it was a proper government.
The Constitution was simply a formal reorganization of the Articles due to a number of significant problems in the design.

John Hancock's big signature certainly does look impressive. But did it just mean that he just wrote big signatures?

The Olive Branch Petition was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 5, 1775 in a final attempt to avoid a full-on war between Great Britain and the Thirteen Colonies, which the Congress represented. Congress had already authorized the invasion of Canada over a week previously, but the petition affirmed American loyalty to Great Britain and beseeched King George III to prevent further conflict. However, the petition was followed by the July 6 Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms, making its success in London improbable. In August 1775, the colonies were formally declared to be in rebellion by the Proclamation of Rebellion, and the petition was rejected by Great Britain—even though King George had refused to read the Olive Branch Petition before declaring the colonists traitors.

It's a stupid bit of mythologising that doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. The myth- that they needed some brave guy to step forward and be the first. It doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. Were the other founders, after hammering out an impressive document suddenly gonna back out? It's the kind of sad mythmaking that does a kind of injustice to actual history.

Pure Hollywood: "Oh no, we have accidentally written a declaration of independence! The King will kill us all if we sign it!"
"Never fear, I have a large signature!"
"Thank you John Hancock! Your bravery has shown us the way! We will do the same! But a bit smaller!"

When did we become a "country?" Heck, the first act of organization the Continental Congress decided to do was the "Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union" which still indicated this was a confederation of sovereign states. I could argue that the United States was not a nation under the articles.

"Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated."

"The said States hereby severally enter into a firm league of friendship with each other, for their common defense, the security of their liberties, and their mutual and general welfare, binding themselves to assist each other, against all force offered to, or attacks made upon them, or any of them, on account of religion, sovereignty, trade, or any other pretense whatever."

If you want to use that as a standard the first President is John Hanson

Because John Hanson was the first president to serve a one-year term under the terms of the Articles of Confederation, his grandson promoted him as the "first President of the United States" and waged a successful campaign to have Hanson's statue placed in Statuary Hall in the US Capitol, even though, according to historian Gregory Stiverson, Hanson was not one of Maryland's foremost leaders of the Revolutionary era.

But the Continental Congress preceded the Articles.

On the other hand, if you want to talk about the FIRST president of the first Continental Congress, that was Peyton Randolph
