The President has fired the director of the FBI, the man investigating his campaigns ties to the Kremlin.

In a weird letter, Trump exonerates himself and fires James Comey, ostensibly for his statements last year about the Clinton e-mails hacked by Russian security services, but pretty obviously because Comey and Sally Yates (who he also fired) have just testified about the White House links to Russia.

Fascinating stuff.

James Comey has been fired as director of the FBI over his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, the White House announced on Tuesday.

Attorney general recommended the firing of Comey, who has been at the center of numerous political controversies since the 2016 US election
The move was condemned by one Senate Democrat as “Nixonian” and raised concerns over the FBI’s investigation into alleged links between aides to Donald Trump and Russia.

In a letter to Comey, the president wrote: “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau.

“It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission.”

The dismissal of America’s top law enforcement official came days after he testified on Capitol Hill about Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state and the FBI’s investigation into Russian election interference.

Can't wait until we all can read the headlines in tomorrow's newspapers.

Trump has really screwed up this time. Reminds me of the Nixon days.

The irony of everything 'trump' brightens my day...

This is the same FBI director that put his foot on the scale in the closing days of the election and pushed trump to victory right?

Indeed, and the firing came at the recommendation of Jeff Sessions, who also lied to congress about his meeting the Russian ambassador, and whose DoJ recently prosecuted someone for laughing at him.

Great demonstration of bi-partisanship by Trump. Numerous Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, Steve Cohen, and Maxine Waters have called on Comey to resign. After several months of Comey not resigning, Trump fired him. Shows Trump can reach across the aisle and work with Democrats.

Now it's time Democrats acted like adults; they got what they wanted and the ball is in their court - they must now enact the president's legislative agenda without question, comment, or delay.

Fun fact, the only other FBI director fired by a president before the expiration of his term was fired by Bill Clinton during the investigation of Hillary Clinton's Travelgate scandal in 1993.

Hopefully the president quickly moves to appoint Kevin McAleenan as FBI director so he can resume the investigations into the Clinton family's crimes against the American people without delay.

Results of the poll of first reactions indicate strong support for the options "I blame Obama", and "Trump just gonna be Trump", tied at 5 votes a piece, indicating a kind of community wide shrugging of shoulders that this is now the political reality that the US has to live with, and suggesting a lack of intelligent agency on Trumps part.

Still, there have been some pretty bizarre developments regarding the issue from the White House and its supporters. Trump's invitations to Kissinger in the middle of a problem that increasingly seems Nixonian, is a particularly odd choice, but then so is his barring American media from his discussions with the Russian ambassador and foreign minister, preferring to invite only Russian state press.

Deeper into the rabbit hole.

New poll added- what's the weirdest part of how the White House and its allies have dealt with the situation?

accommodating the democrats' demands that Comey go - great spirit of bipartisanship by Trump to give even the powerless opposition a bone, but it's unclear why

Hillary Clinton endorser today convicted of 18 federal felonies after FBI investigation ... to be imprisoned. I wonder if this is why the Democrats kept demanding Comey go?

Former U.S. Rep Corrine Brown is now a convicted felon 18 times over after she was found guilty Thursday in her federal corruption trial related to the theft of money from an unregistered Virginia-based charity.

Brown, who listened in stunned silence as the verdicts were read, was convicted of conspiracy, five counts of mail fraud, seven counts of wire fraud, one count of scheme to conceal material facts, one count of obstruction of IRS laws and three tax fraud charges. S

Brown, a Democrat who represented the Florida district that included Jacksonville from 1993 to 2016, had pleaded not guilty to all of the charges, including fraud. She lost re-election last fall after her indictment.

As she left the courtroom after hearing the verdicts, Brown appeared shocked. She was released on the terms of her original bail until sentencing, which has not been set.

She declined to comment as she left the federal courthouse with supporters shouting that they loved her as she piled into a car with her entourage and pulled away.

I actually thought about trying to make this poll balanced so that there were more pro-Trump options, but the weirdness factor of the WH responses kinda outweighed the options available. The Dem response wasn't all that weird, and the best that I could come up with is that Trump said he was surprised that it wasn't welcomed by his opponents. It's kinda weird that he thought the Dems would be on-board, I guess.

As is, the Trump White House seems to be scrambling to get a straight narrative here. I'm not sure anyone thinks this really has anything to do with the way that Comey dealt with Clinton anymore.

Who's we?

Frank Hollande survived 5 years with a 9% approval rating. Trump ain't going anywhere.

Americans become easily exhausted by a single story line. So long as Russia occupies all attention there will be a general tune out of everything political.

Some have different priorities based on different circumstances and different understandings from different lessons, different experiences, different results, and different education.

To some, fighting political correctness was a major priority. Some of those some know not too much really changes just because the office of president changes. But this time, for once, political correctness took a missile to the sausage and up into the pee hole. IMO, trump could do nothing but talk shit n play golf for 4 years and still accomplish a bigger and more fundamental goal of returning america to the home of the brave rather than a bunch of scaredy cats scared to speak against any grain that isn't p.c. our freedom of speech has been weakened and whittled down for a long time. Now freedom of speech is stronger.
