This TED talk says everything I've been saying for years, but it says it so much more clearly.

Exactly. People choose to take drugs, and therefore punishment will work to stop these hippies.

Thanks, Duke. Having just celebrated 29 years sober, that so sums up what I have seen in recovery over the years. And I share what Portugal did with many, because it is such a breath of fresh air. People don't want to be addicted they just can't find a different way. One does reach a place where you can't imagine life without. It truly is inconceivable. And a fortunate few of us find our way into recovery. The vast majority end in jails, institutions and death. Thanks for helping to share that there is another way.

If that were true why aren't we free of all addicts. We have been punishing for centuries.

that is true of many things duk.

i mean, we do ton of shit everyday to avoid thinking about our lives, about what we really are and what purpose are we following. this turns into a full-blown existential discussion.

of course most of what we do is not as damaging as a heroin addiction, but still. like watching tv, overeating, even reading. unless of course you've decided your purpose in life is to do exactly that, to divert your attention from the important issues with all forms of diversion.

I spent the best part of two decades viewing things through an alcohol lens. Fun times, but I found myself remembering less and less of them. Also ciggerettes and alcohol go hand in hand like sloppy bj and forced teen porn. It wasn't fun anymore, most of my friends are older than me. I watched them with multiple failed marriages, children they hardly saw, and being the sad old fucker at the pub trying to pick up a 20yr old and not seeing how creepy it was. Been 6yrs without smokes or grog. I'ld like to think I could drink again and control it, but the realist in me suggests that is just wishful thinking. I've spent so much more time with my family, opened a good little business, learnt to read and write another language(the speaking it is a bit more difficult, my arabic sounds like two tom cats fucking). I've taken my parents to hospital, the airport, their siblings houses, picked them up from those places. All things that selfish, too drunk to think about driving bogan would never have done. Addiction suxes, but knowing you have an addictive personality gives you something to harness. I've learnt to channel that persistence and drive to drink or smoke weed, or just shag. Have put that drive into learning new business skills, I'm a chef, but have won a few minor local awards for marketing.

Enough being serious. GFed u fuktard wankers!

I spent most of my money on women, booze and drugs. The rest of my money I wasted.
