The US Secret Service uses nicknames as codes for Presidents and various important people.
Bill Clinton, for example, was termed "Eagle", and his family members were all given codenames starting with the letter "E", which is pretty much a rule.

The answers are below.

Can you tell who the name refers to?

Round 1) Guess the President:

1) Renegade
2) Rawhide
3) Mogul
4) Lancer
5) Volunteer

Round 2) Match the codename to the person (non-Presidents)

Codenames:

Evergreen
Denali
Halo
Celtic
Marvel
Hoosier
Intrepid

Names:

Joe Biden
Ivanka Trump
Bernie Sanders
Mike Pence
Hillary Clinton
Sarah Palin
Pope John Paul II

Answers are below:

How did you do?

I knew who Rawhide was, and I took a guess and got Evergreen correct.

I didn't know any of the others.

There are hints in the question. Plus, Halo is kinda a gimme, no?

Trump is already one of the answers. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out which one.

What good is a codename if it's pubic in the opening weeks of a presidency?

I hope that was meant to say "public", but anyway I think it's mainly just a shorthand way of referring to people and things. To be fair though, if you want to keep things secret, perhaps "Secret Service" is not the best name to give yourselves.

But anyway... it is what it is.

When the Secret Service began, its agents were mostly secret -- undercover operatives with a very limited mandate to infiltrate counterfeiting operations. The numerous other jobs that it has been given since then were unforeseen by its founders.

You should still have figured out who "Halo" was, mate. That wasn't exactly Bletchley Park level code cracking.
