Since the Russian hooligans invaded Ukraine, they have my vote.

Weirdly, I thought English hooligans were a thing of the past. Tough laws were brought in to deal with this nonsense. It's weird to see it come back.
I'm a bit sceptical of the reports though. Other countries, like France, Russia, and Italy, have not done much to curb fan violence.
I do wonder if the Brits are being targeted because of old reputations.

Not seen Sin City then? Watch it- it'll blow your mind.
Well, maybe not, but he is creepy in it. I think your thinking of Green Street though.

These were not English football hooligans just a few English blokes enjoying a drink that were attacked by an organised Marseilles ultras who were described as French locals. Hooliganism in football in England has been gone for around 20 years, of course there's always going to be the odd skirmish where there's thousands of young men.
Had they been an organised crew from back in the day where everybody knew their place and their role. Then the English would have destroyed the French and Russians like they did everywhere they went!

you sound like an apologist
English hooligans have a history. They're scumbags. Hillsborough happened in what country, again?
exactly.

Are you talking about the "RN sailors below decks on long ocean voyages" reputation? Or the "after lights-out at all boys boarding school" reputation?
I'd say old reputations is a safe bet as to why they're getting beat-up ...

Not down to armed completely sober organised Russian crews vs english fans who'd had a drink and were not looking for trouble? You're a man of the world indeed!

There's no such thing as a "completely sober Russian."
You lose.

After spending 15 minutes discussing subjects with you this morning I'm inclined to agree with you that I lost something!

that is utterly stupid. there are no violence problems in france since at least 10 years and since they removed the PSG hooligans from the stadiums.
Russian hooligans are highly prepared militias, that don't go there to get drunk. They had everything prepared to ambush drunk english fans: and let's be honnest, the english fans were not that much of hooligans. I've heard stuff from hooligan specialists thatwere in Marseille and explained what happened. Mostly some lokomotiv moscow assholes that just game to kick some drunken brit ass (and they might have killed one...). The english were more into retaliation.

I did like how the second anything started on the days before the game, the French police were straight in there shooting everyone with tear gas and clubbing people into a bloody mess. Someone in French law enforcement could probably do with some PR coaching.

Noooo no no, I am well aware that the French black shirts police operate under a system of law enforcement similar to that of Idi Amin. I just found it funny that they apply the same rules to foreign sports fans to just the same extent that they do to France's minority population. Clubbing your neighbor's citizens into a bloody pulp isn't exactly a great exercise in soft power projection.

Here's a report by a Leyton Orient fan called Colin Williams, it's from his Facebook page.
Colin Williams We took our flag down quickly after the game and got out safely - fortunately we were near an exit.
Been reading the reports about the violence, some as usual are blaming drunken England supporters, but this was NOT the case. The BBC report by George Riley (5 Live) is a disgrace! The Daily Mail report is a little closer to what happened, but it misses out some important details.
We were with the thousands and thousands of England Supporters throughout the afternoon, and ate at a restaurant by the Old Port. All was good! The day before, I took photos and made a video of the Northern Irish supporters in Nice. I did the same in Marseille with the England supporters. I may well sent it to the authorities as evidence.
PROBLEM NUMBER 1: The policing in Nice was superb, a massive presence but they stayed well back watching the Irish get very loud and drunk. In Marseille the French Riot Police were nothing less than a disgrace!!! At one point in the afternoon they decided for some unknown reason that they wanted to clear the main area by the port of England supporters. The lined up in their riot gear - batons, dogs, tear gas and water cannons and effectively attacked the English. We realised what was going on and managed to get out quickly so we didn't get knocked over by the cannons or affected by tear gas! I've got photos of the riot police just before they 'went in!'
PROBLEM NUMBER 2: Reported a little more accurately by the press. We moved along the quayside to join other supporters. I was videoing the England supporters in the bars, waving flags and singing loudly at the moment the Russians attacked. There was a narrow pedestrian street leading down to the port. We saw the hundreds of Russians running towards us, throwing bottles, chairs, stones and many other items they had stolen. Many were wearing balaclavas so not to be identified. This apparently happens frequently in Russian league games where rival supporters plan attacks meticulously. Needless to say, some of the English stood their ground and fought back - the police on this occasion took ages to get to the scene to protect us, so the 'battle' raged for several minutes.
PROBLEM NUMBER 3: End of game, we got out quickly so didn't witness very much of what happened.
PROBLEM NUMBER 4: We arrived at the main railway station just after 11 for the only night train back to Nice at 00:30. Had a coffee with many other English supporters waiting for our train and one back to Paris. Once the platform number had been announced, around midnight we made our way to the gate only to find it blocked by French Riot police with dogs and batons raised. They were deliberately goading the Brits to get a reaction by allowing only one person through at a time. Anyone with luggage had to open it (which was only French passengers). As we got close to the train departure we began to get crushed with the number of people behind trying to get to the gate. There were no announcements as to what was going on at the front of the queue. Needless to say, the train left on time with very few passengers on board and we didn't manage to get on. As I'm sure you can imagine, it then started to get extremely nasty, a situation engineer by the police. A lot of shouting, screaming abuse at the police and waving of fists, but NO violence! With no train and nowhere to go the crowd didn't disperse and it was announced that an SNCF would put on an extra train an hour later.
We got finally back to our log cabin at around 5 this morning!!
Off to see the N. Irish tonight, confident that the police in Nice will again conduct themselves properly.

- a photo of relaxed, apparently happy football fans standing around minding their own business (prior to the well-documented tear gassing and beating they later received from the French police) - a photo of a Chinese armed response unit who have been brought out to halt the progress of a Uyghur mob during a period of significant domestic unrest, although appear to be showing restraint and taking no action against the mob
I also notice that Keefie has managed to turn up some eye-witness reports confirming that the French police were, as I originally said, heavy-handed, confrontational, and aggressive, which you presumably do not dispute given that you have not contradicted him.
So, in summary, the French police are exceptionally brutal thugs. Glad we are on the same page.

Yes, the French riot police can learn a thing or two from the Chicago riot police.

MI6/CIA need to start funding/training/arming the lads to prevent further embarrassment.
