I just watched the new Star Wars. It's not really a new film, it's a rehash of the stuff fans are familiar with.

The things it copied weren't really the interesting parts of the movie. The characters were the interesting part, the development of the old ones and the introduction of new ones. I have faith that the next one will be interesting too, the audience have bought in to it for the most part and he now has a bit more freedom with what he can do creatively.

I wasn't terribly drawn in by the directing in the new Star Wars


I don't think he's bad but I don't think he's anything special

This is pretty much the thought that bothered me. He's definitely a steady hand, as he proved with Star Trek.

I'm not sure the old characters really got much development. It was more like just seeing them again, doing the same things. I'm definitely keen to see if he can do something with the next one though, freer of constraints, hopefully.

Tony Pulis level rather than SAF.

So how would you guys rate him compared to Lucas?

Tough to say, the best of the original trilogy was Imho, Empire, and he didn't direct it. Or Jedi, for that matter. Just episode 4.

He directed the prequels, but I can't say I was impressed.

I honestly had no idea he didn't direct 5 and 6. Interesting from rotten tomatoes ratings:

I - 56%
II - 66%
III - 79%
IV - 94%
V - 94%
VI - 80%
VII - 93%

It basically has the new one up there with the best, much better than 6.

6 was the first one I saw. I'm not sure I can objectively judge it. I also think that rotten tomatoes is good in some ways, but there's also the test of time. Episode 4 did not get great reviews when it came out, but became a classic.

I think Abrams faces a test- how to appeal to old fans, new fans, and critics.

Film internet ratings are always inflated for modern films, especially ones that just came out. Everyone drinks the kool aid and doesn't judge it objectively

The hype certainly affects things. Good critics are hard to find. I used to be one. Free tickets and books are a good deal.
