Obama to clarify gun laws

Postby Symmetry on Tue Jan 05, 2016 7:31 pm

In Dr King’s words, we need to feel the fierce urgency of now, because people are dying,ā€ a visibly emotional Obama told an audience of mass shooting victims and relatives in the East Room.

President Obama, fed up with the frankly bizarre gun culture of the US, takes a few sane steps.

What part of the 2nd Amendment, in which says the "right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed" don't you understand?

He cries way too often in the last year. Every other speech he gives is "in an emotional address" where he's sobbing hysterically. Someone needs to up his Flurazepam prescription and make sure Biden (Jill, definitely not Joe) has the nuclear trigger. I like how the WaPo described it: "a speech that veered from weepy to outraged and even comic."

That said, if you read into the article, it seems he's only actually done one thing ...

    > clarify that online sellers and gun shows need to be licensed

(not ordering amazon.com to get a license before they Same-Day Prime my 155mm howitzer ... clarifying that the existing law says Amazon needs a license before they Same-Day Prime my 155mm howitzer)

Well, infringements and restrictions are already in place..

To ask a question in reply, why do you oppose background checks?

My last time posting, as far as you are concerned.

There's restrictions on the most important amendment to the constitution aka 1st Amendment aka Freedom of Speech. You can't yell FIRE! in a theater. Among other things.

Driving a car is a privilege, not a right. There's also certain tests to pass for that privilege to operate different types of motor vehicles, trucks and motor cycles. You can lose your licence to drive if you violate rules and laws.

Same goes with airplanes, jets and helicopters.

Certain dog breeds are banned in some communities, plus home associations can ban dogs altogether.

Knives? Really?

Yes, your list can include all sorts of ignorant statements.

By the way, did you watch the complete President Obama speech today? I doubt that. He never said he would ban guns. Some of us, or shall I say most Americans want sensible gun reforms. Those reforms include background checks for people wanting to purchase guns.

I keep hearing (insert plural noun here) claiming that felons (and everyone else) can easily buy guns online or at gun shows without background checks. I have been buying / selling guns for a long time, both online and at shows, and have NEVER seen this. Checks are ALWAYS required. Where are these sites that are being touted as so heinous? I certainly can't find one...

gunbroker.com is an example; all sales / purchases REQUIRE FFL cert, which REQUIRES a background check....

Perhaps they refer to local papers? Oregon now requires the check even between private parties....

President Obama was a phony as a three dollar bill. Yes, even those tears were fake. Invoking Dr. King Jr. who wanted a concealed carry permit but was DENIED BY THE RACIST FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. Is merely the icing on the cake. This isn't about guns, this is about POLITICAL CONTROL.

OOOooooOOOoooo, GOVERNMENT CONTROL, OOooooOOOOOooo.

America is a government of the people, for the people. Really, you think President Obama going to declare himself a DICTATOR?

Unlike you, MOST Americans want background checks on anyone wanting to buy guns.

Anyone who watched the speech from beginning to end, would know that those tears were real. He met with many parents of children that were shot and murdered.

But, we got partisan morons who constantly have to twist things around for their twisted agendas.

I'm OK with background checks and even bans in all of those cases. Question, is why aren't you?

This is interesting,
1)what sort of checks are you required to make in terms of background?

2) As an arms dealer, do you think checks are important?

3) Why do you think there's so much opposition to Obama asking that others follow these checks?

mission creep

No one is opposed to the background checks, since they already exist. They're opposed to the spectacle of a political victory since it paves the road for future victories on policies they might actually oppose. If the act of even clarifying an existing law is so monumentally difficult that it requires the expenditure of major capital then the process of enacting new laws, like licensing, becomes impossible.

I don't have one iota of a problem with anything that Obama is doing right now but, as a procedural exercise, I also hope he's fought every step of the way; filibusters, gridlock, lawsuits, protests by the obese and the toothless and the people from rectangular-shaped states - we need the whole carnival to wagon-up.

Being a gun owner myself, I know that easy access to guns by felons and the mentally ill or someone who's pissed off at someone, can easily buy a gun at a gun show without those stupid background checks. Most guns bought by criminals in Chicago are guns that are bought by individuals from out of state and resold at a tidy profit.

Internet gun sales by individuals is illegal in Illinois, unless you "seller' have a FOID card and the buyer has one. But, that does not stop it from states outside of Illinois.

We have too many guns in America already and introducing more guns and having everyone carrying guns in public is going to result in a society that is based on fear. Having all these ill-trained civilians with guns is going to create more deadly mishaps. Unfortunately, America will have to endure more mass killings, accidents and other blunders, due to having all these guns flooding our streets.

Ok Bernie...your state is significantly different from Oregon and Washington....EVERY gun sale at gun shows REQUIRE the FICS check (oregon link http://www.oregon.gov/OSP/ID/pages/fics.aspx ). That amazes me.

1)what sort of checks are you required to make in terms of background?

Above

2) As an arms dealer, do you think checks are important?

I am not a dealer...a dealer is required to have an FFL (Fed Firearms Licence)...I am simply an enthusiast and enjoy buying, selling, trading. YES, of course they are important.

3) Why do you think there's so much opposition to Obama asking that others follow these checks?

I don't understand the problem, as outlined in my original post, as I have never been exposed to anywhere that one can buy / sell without the checks....course, I'm not a gangbanger so I don't deal in stolen weapons out the trunk of my pimpmobile

Yes. Obviously he won't say so directly. No one is THAT STUPID ...

(Oh wait - waves to Bernie - Hi there Bernie - No one that can actually be elected President?)

A "Government for the people" doesn't try to make it more difficult for "the people" to defend themselves. We haven't been a Government for the people for decades now, thanks to both parties, I should hasten to point out. We are a "Government of the bureaucrat, by the bureaucrat, and for the bureaucrat." Even members of congress are more akin to a bureaucrat than a real elected short term serving official.

Currently having a brain fart otherwise I would mention a novel at this point ... Why don't you mention the novel for me and save me some time.
