Not sure when denying other people's celebrations, even that New Years happens this time of year, became a "war" on Christianity. Jews do predate us a tad, after all... and Jesus was one. (not to mention other religions)

MY Christian faith teaches me to love everyone.

"Predate" kind of threw me on this one. Ambiguity is fun.

Sorry, should have been clearer. Predate can be read two ways. Pre-date, or as in the sense of predators predate on prey.

I know what you meant, but I read it the other way on a first skim.

First of all, I love everyone else as well. But let's be honest here.

Hanukkah is not a major Jewish religious feast. In fact it has really only been publically pushed as a feast outside the community since around 1970.

New Years, is a relatively new feast as well. A common date in Christianity for the new year was the feast of the Annunciation on March 25. Some used the Spring Equinox. Jan 1, which is .. eight days after Dec 25, was the feast of the circumcision. It is even more "Christian" that the new year was moved from the Annunciation of the conception of Jesus to the Circumcision of Jesus. The uniform requirement of Jan 1 is a result of the Gregorian reforms in the 18th century.

Like Hanukkah , Christmas is not a one day event. It begins on Christmas Day and ends 12 days later with the Epiphany, with the circumcision happening on the 8th day.

Mind you, like Hanukkah, most of the common things we associate with the holiday are relatively new; mostly the result of a Victorian era remake of the holiday as it had become an occasion for beggars to go door to door asking for things. Even the traditional Christmas Creche was invented by Francis of Assisi. Even the giving of gifts was not uniform for most of Christian history, with some traditions giving the gifts at Epiphany and others on the Feast of St. Nicholas (December 6 or 19 depending on the tradition).

These multiple variations, and the recent modifications, are part of why I think "Happy Holidays" is fine. To me, Christmas has been co-opted, not so much by other traditions, but by retailers seeking a profit. Its the one time of year I sort of envy the Amish. BUT I don't look to society or others to change that. It has to come within each family. I am not the least harmed by other people's celebrations. (well.. OK, the kids seeing what other kids get is an issue, but that is part of life itself. Some kids always have more than others, but what matters is what they learn at home).

I generally don't like "Merry Christmas" (but I won't make a federal case out of it) until Dec 24, because up until then it's technically advent, although "I/We wish you a Merry Christmas" is ok because it is in the future. It's like saying "Happy Easter" in the middle of Lent.

'Happy holidays' is a fkn retarded thing to say. Why would anyone be bothered by you saying 'Happy Christmas' when it is Christmas?

Surely the question is why would anyone be annoyed by Happy Holidays when it's several days after Christmas?

What? I just don't understand the relevance of the cancer thing.

My friend whose sister died hates saying happy holidays. So it's a weird thing to say, case closed.

Well it's still technically the "Christmas Season" (there are 12 days of Christmas) but on the other hand, there are many "Holy Days" in those 12 days of Christmas. Since some of these feasts are movable, there is the current list of them for this year.

Dec 25: Feast of Christmas
Dec 26: Feast of St. Stephen - Deacon and First Martyr
Dec 27: Feast of the Holy Family
Dec 28: Feast of the Holy Innocents (Martyrs)
Jan 1: Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God
Jan 6: Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord
Jan 10: Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

That's a lot of Holy Days right there in that short span.
